I had to go with The D.O.C.

At the time dude had one peer as a lyricist: Rakim.

If we had got 2 more albums from him on the same level as "No One Can Do It Better", the GOAT top three would Rakim, The D.O.C., and an argument for 3rd place between BDK and KRS.

FOH!

D.O.C. isn't seeing Rakim with the Hubble Space Telescope.

I'm not saying that D.O.C. is wack or anything, his lyrics are solid and his album No One Can Do It Better is a solid 4 mics (maybe even 4.5) but it's nowhere near the 5 mic classic of Criminal Minded, Paid In Full or Long Live The Kane. Nor did it have the impact of Straight Outta Compton, It Takes A Nation of Millions or the creativity of 3 Feet High And Rising or Paul's Boutique.

It's Funky Enough is an iconic Hip Hop record, but Fight The Power is an iconic pop record that everybody in America knows. In fact they both came out the same summer (89) and to compare the impact of the two would be like comparing the impact of a firecracker to the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I can give you guys an even match up; Compare No One Can Do It Better vs Ride The Rhythm by Chill Rob G. They both only dropped one album (yeah I know D.O.C. dropped a second album with his voice all messed up) and they were around the same time too. I think both albums dropped in 1989. Chill Rob G was the superior lyricist but the production on No One Can Do It Better sounds better.

If Fight The Power loses this poll/tournament then I might as well just log off and find another message board.
