What is it in laymens terms?
Why is it bad and why could it be good?
Does it always favor the record company?
What recourse does a record company have if they don’t recoup they money?

educate an old niggah

360 Deal is when the label get a piece of everything an artist produces.

Originally in the record industry, a label only gets the rights to an artist's music and then pay the artist a royalty. The label would provide marketing and promotion in exchange for owning the artist's catalog.

Then by like the mid 2000s when the record industry was dying, labels came up with the 360 deal, and the labels started getting a piece of their touring, songwriting, endorsement deals and merchandising.

But Motown was the first label to do a 360 deal. Them motherfuckers took everything. They even owned your fucking likeness.

A 360 deal is when the record label gets a cut of everything you do including show money and merch (all revenue streams)

this came to prominence when album sales started to go down and the labels needed to get paid since getting it strictly from album sales was kinda dicey

360 deals are helpful to certain artists who would rather let the label put their money towards marketing and promotion, etc so they themselves don’t have to worry about it
