Here is the first trailer for Stranger Fruit, the documentary written and directed by Jason Pollock that raised eyebrows at last year’s SXSW film festival and was re-edited to include information about the backlash of the doc itself and also to insert what they say is new evidence. The film put the St. Louis County prosecutor’s office under a microscope and also interviews Brown’s family members.
Gravitas Ventures acquired the controversial pic and will released it April 3. Starz will be airing the film in June. Watch the trailer above; here is the first poster.
The film follows the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, MO. The killing of an unarmed black man by a white cop resulted in several nights of riots in Ferguson — known by the locals as Ferghanistan — and gave rise to the Black Lives Matter movement. After impaneling a grand jury on the matter, the St. Louis’ prosecutor’s office did not indict Wilson.
Three autopsies were done on Brown and found that he had been shot six times, including twice in the head. A viral video of two men witnessing the shooting as it happened described Brown as already giving up when he was shot. Another story circulated that Brown was charging the officer. Forensic evidence concluded that Brown was shot in the head at short range.
