PRAISE: Its funny how the smallest exchanges or looks between people can easily be written off and assumptions are made but sometimes you actually get a chance to get to the core of what an acquaintance is all about. This is done in a very humorous but thoughtful way in this movie about a couple in a well worn marriage Joe and Angela (Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde), have their neighbors Hawk and Pína (Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz) over for dinner and all types of sparks fly. I think writers Rashida Jones and Will McCormack really captured what its like to be in a long term relationship. The banter between Joe an Angela is so real from the gloves are off and im going to tell you about yourself and how comfortable a couple is inside their home to easily say and do things in front of each other.
Rogen and Wilde do such a good job and play off each other so well. Enter Hawk and Pína who have a vibe that's casual and not as frantic or bitter as Joe and Angela. Norton and Cruz do a great job but I could tell theres something else going on with them besides just being the weve got it together neighbors. Watching this quartet was a lot of fun as the layers are peeled back on both couples which really makes this one of the most watchable dramedies I've ever seen. Some very sharp Direction from Olivia Wilde really capturing the vibe and awkwardness of having people you don't know or associate with over for dinner.
PROBLEMS: Even with a new take on situations like this some parts of the movie played out in a very predictable way.
