Alex Murdaugh’s double murder convictions for the 2021 killings of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, were overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court on May 13, 2026. The unanimous ruling ordered a new trial, citing improper external influences by Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill, who allegedly pressured jurors and undermined Murdaugh’s credibility.
The court found that Hill’s conduct, which included suggesting jurors could not trust Murdaugh’s testimony, violated his right to an impartial jury.
The Supreme Court also criticized the trial judge for allowing excessive evidence regarding Murdaugh’s financial crimes, which it deemed unfairly prejudicial.
Murdaugh will not be released from prison, as he is currently serving a 40-year federal sentence for stealing millions from clients and a concurrent 27-year state sentence for financial crimes.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson stated that prosecutors intend to aggressively retry Murdaugh for the murders as soon as possible.
