Family: Black man shot by deputy held a sandwich, not a gun

I heard it was only 1 black juror and during the proceeding I believe 2 or 3 were replaced
No need to retry him because no way you're going to win a case with a jury like that
The only hope is if the feds step in & try him somewhere else with a more diverse jury pool

Former Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy Jason Meade was found guilty of reckless homicide on May 7, 2026, in connection with the fatal shooting of Casey Goodson Jr. in December 2020. This verdict concludes Meade’s second trial, as the jury could not reach a unanimous decision on the more serious murder charge, resulting in a mistrial for that count.

Meade, who is a Baptist pastor, shot Goodson six times, including five times in the back, after claiming he saw Goodson waving a gun. Prosecutors and Goodson’s family maintained that the 23-year-old was unarmed, carrying a bag of sandwiches and his keys, and that his licensed firearm was found under his body with the safety engaged. Meade did not testify during this second trial, whereas he had testified in his own defense during the first trial in 2024, which also ended in a mistrial.

  • Sentencing: Meade is scheduled to be sentenced on June 16, 2026 (some reports cite July 16), facing a prison term of nine to 36 months for the third-degree felony reckless homicide charge.
  • Future Proceedings: It remains unclear whether prosecutors will pursue a third trial on the unresolved murder charge, with some community members and family expressing a desire for further accountability.
  • Significance: This conviction marks only the second time an Ohio law enforcement officer has been found guilty in the killing of a Black person since the death of George Floyd in 2020.
