Over 150 unvaccinated students in South Carolina quarantining after measles exposure

The outbreak has grown to at least eight measles cases, officials said.

At least 153 students from two schools in South Carolina are under quarantine for 21 days due to measles exposures, state health officials announced.

The quarantined students were not vaccinated, officials added. The schools are both located in Spartanburg County: Global Academy of South Carolina and Fairforest Elementary. The outbreak has grown to at least eight measles cases, with a total of 11 cases reported overall in the state this year.

The U.S. has reported at least 1,563 measles cases this year – the highest number since 1992, the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show. There have been 44 measles outbreaks reported this year. In comparison, 16 outbreaks were reported last year.

It comes amid declining MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccination rates nationwide. Over 95% of kindergarteners were vaccinated with the MMR shot prior to the pandemic. That figure has now fallen to 92.5% in the most recent school year.

The lower rates leave an estimated 286,000 kindergarteners without protection from measles.

Two more Maryland residents have contracted measles after traveling out of state, according to the State Department of Health.

According to health officials, anyone who went to the following locations at the listed dates and times may have been exposed to measles:

  • Giant Foods Pasadena (4315 Mountain Rd., Pasadena) on April 12, 2026, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • Bean Rush Cafe (1121A Annapolis St., Annapolis) on April 14, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • The building located at 2062 Generals Highway, Annapolis on April 15, 2026, from 1 - 4:30 p.m.
  • Whole Foods Annapolis (200 Harker Pl., Ste. 100, Annapolis) on April 15, 2026, from 3:30 - 6:15 p.m.
  • The building located at 181 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis on April 20, 2026, from 4 - 7 p.m.
  • Arnold Professional Building (1521 Ritchie Highway, Arnold) on April 15, 2026, from 1 - 3:40 p.m.
  • Arnold Professional Center (1509 Ritchie Highway, Arnold) on April 16, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., and/or on April 20, 2026, from 10:50 a.m. - 2 p.m.

These latest cases are in residents of the Northwest Region. One is a pre-school-age child (0-4) and the other is a school-age child (5-12).
