Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Wednesday downplayed the spike in gas costs driven by the war in Iran. Testifying to Congress, he repeatedly said that prices at the pump were higher under the Biden administration. The national average hit $4.12 this week, compared to $2.37 a gallon when President Trump took office.
 
The Senate on Wednesday blocked a Democratic bid to cancel arms sales to Israel, but the party’s concerns over the war against Iran widened its rift over arming the longtime U.S. ally.

Progressive senators led by Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, have long been critical of robust American aid for Israel’s military. But several Democrats who in the past had opposed efforts by Mr. Sanders and others to block U.S. arms transfers changed course and registered their disapproval of the sale of armored bulldozers and 12,000 bombs.

The Pentagon has met with senior executives of Ford Motor and General Motors to gauge whether the auto industry could help the military acquire vehicles, munitions or other hardware more quickly and at lower costs, according to three people familiar with the talks.

The conversations are in the very early stages, and relate to the possible production of components by the companies, not entire weapons systems. No specific projects are currently being negotiated, the people said.
