I had three PC's in '97. Two in my living room and one in my bedroom (the crew used to fall through for Quake deathmatch and Starcraft after it was released). I also had dial-up and "broadband" internet (high speed downloads via cable modem, uploads were via 56k modem) and eventually a 2B ISDN setup, plus serial and LAN connections between all machines.
It's also well documented just how many households had a pc with internet access back then 'cause it was so easy to track. In '97 only about 16% of households had internet access, in '96 it was much less: Only 10% of households had internet access. And it was all on dial-up, so when momma'nem needed the phone, you had to get off.

Having a PC ≠having a pc with internet access.
In 2000 , 42% of households had intenet access. Also, only 1% had broadband (*DSL, ISDN, or Cable) of any type in 2000 (I was a part of that 1%) which means 99% of all households that had internet access got it via dial-up modem. That breaks down even further based on income and race: The greater the household income, the more likely you were to have internet access of some type, the less you made the less likely you were to have it. The racial breakdown was that Black folks and Hispanics were far less likely to have had internet access in those days versus whites and asians. Native Americans had the absolute lowest numbers for internet access going well into the 00's and 10's.

I'm not moving it: Bottom line, having internet access was NOT common in the 90's like you swear it was and this is a very well documented fact. Shit, having a PC in the home wasn't even common back then. As I said earlier: It was far more common for a household to have a game console than a PC in the 90's. Again, this is very well documented.
If your family had one: great, y'all had money regardless of what you might think, because among Black households, only the well off had both a PC and internet access in 1996.

Yall didn't mention just black folks before. Everyone else was talking about the whole U.S population. Even though most had dial up at that time, they were still on these chat services and other websites. It was slow as hell but we made due.
All my friends had computers growing up. We wasn't rich either.

I brought it up to add more perspective considering that the overwhelming majority of us in this thread are Black. When you break it down by race and income, it shows that most black folks that were even on the internet in 2000+ were mostly upper middle class and above. Sure there were those that weren't, but they're outliers for the most part.
