So how are most people retiring??

@Might-Guy

I got two and a half years left until I retire from the military. I could have switched my retirement from a pension to the blended retirement system they got out now (basically a 401k) but I got other options outside of that. While stacking that pension and VA money is cool you gotta set yourself up. High yield savings accounts/IRA’s the way to go especially if you deploy and save that extra bread. Start that shit the earlier the better. Thrift Savings Plan is also a GREAT way to stack bread for the long term. My mom was a federal employee and started that shit late but she was able to build up over 600K before she died. There’s plenty of avenues to take but like I said plan ahead and do it now don’t wait.

Not sure how many years you have left in the military (may have missed that part) but like the post above, I REALLY advise for you to invest in the TSP. Not sure if the military does the match (i know civilians get a 5% match). Also from ex-military people that I know, it'll be a good idea to make sure you got your paperwork together for some disability. if you can get 80-100% disability you in there. i'd be going to the doctor for ANYTHING if i can get that disability check lol

Also might not be a bad idea to get a civilian fed gig or gov't contractor gig that way you can double-dip with your TSP./401K. Make sure you invest at least to the company match and/or more so you won't have to work until you can draw social security
