Quincy Jones dead at 91

You can't compare Quincy Jones to Dr Dre and R Kelly.

Quincy Jones worked with real musicians that played instruments, Dr Dre and R Kelly use drum machines and synthesizers. It's a totally different ballgame.

Ummm...

Quincy worked with synthesizers and drum machines. Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad was full of synthesizers and drum machines played by musicians.

Dr. Dre and R. Kelly worked with plenty of session musicians.

Y'all don't know shit about shit.

Dr Dre and R Kelly might have worked with session musicians but not on the scale of Quincy Jones. There's really no comparison. It's apples and oranges.

Quincy Jones working with session musicians doesn't signify anything about the quality of music that he made or how involved he was in the process in the making of melodies, harmonies and rhythm.

Most people know of Quincy due to his work with Michael Jackson. Quincy's own albums and film scores weren't well received.

The recording process and the building for MJ's albums, Quincy wasn't composing. The harmonies, melodies and rhythms were built by Michael and session musicians and engineers.

It was Michael hanging with Greg Phillinganes, Bruce Swedian and Bill Bottrell. These albums were made in the 70s and 80s, when the industry actually had accurate credits.

This is the problem people have with trying to give credit based on musicianship or technical ability instead of what making an album is actually like. Making an album is about executive decision making, project management and product management. That's what Quincy provided.

Someone like J-Dilla, sitting down with his MPC and mixer, making beats has more input on the musicianship, technical competency of his albums than Quincy Jones producing Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad.

But people will act like J-Dilla has less musicianship and technical ability than Quincy Jones because J-Dilla doesn't read music and play the fucking trumpet.

Lol.

Nonsense.

Quincy Jones released at least a dozen albums in the 70s under his own name, or Soundtracks to movies.

Quincy worked with real musicians, J Dilla samples musicians. Quincy Jones was playing chess, J Dilla was playing checkers.

You guys only know Quincy Jones for his work with Michael Jackson, but he was producing legends in the 1950s and 60s.

He was working with 40 piece orchestras.

Comparing him to J Dilla or Dr Dre is just silly.

Dr Dre wouldn't know how to arrange a 40 piece orchestra.

We've had this discussion about QJ some time ago.

Started with this misguided statement:

Dilla actually knew how to play a few instruments (drums, keys and I heard cello or some shit) plus was a great session producer. Ppl shit on Electric Circus, but that was some of the best music on a rap album up to that point.

According to the death certificate released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, obtained by TMZ ... the official cause of death is pancreatic cancer -- which happens to be the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths in the country.

According to the doc, there were no other contributing factors to his death.
