OPINION White Mans Burden: Ranking Eminem’s Albums

My favorite Eminem albums:

1. The Eminem Show
2. MMLP
3. Recovery
4. Music To Be Murdered By (Side A)
5. Relapse Refill


Em is still a top 5 GOAT in my book but he does has some sub-par/trash albums that were lackluster/trash over the years like Encore, MMLP 2, Relapse (OG version), & Revival (which is probably the WORST album in Em's discography).
 
After some thought, my next installment of the ranking series will indeed be Drake. I’ll only do this however for rappers who have had a contentious (yet noteworthy) discography over their career. Doing this for dudes like Jay/Nas is too easy.

For example, eventually I’d want to do this for Jadakiss, Game, Rick Ross, Fabulous, UGK..

Knowing what we know now, man did Em emerge within the perfect time. The beginning of 1999 was just the right moment for a white rapper that could actually rap to take flight. Add on the credible backing of the legendary Dr. Dre still trying to get the damn record label off & you have a recipe for success. Em was unlike any other rapper I could think of at that time. He was foul monthed, white trash, battle ready MC that hated his mother, wished ill will on all who wronged him & welcomed anarchy like it was a long lost friend. As a 6th grader I was hooked immediately. Em’s breakthrough is nothing short of phenomenal. You’re taken to the world of Slim Shady & all its splendid debauchery. Even if you didn’t know Em’s background as a battle rapper at the time it clearly showed in his rhymes. Enough punches & wordplay that’ll leave you dying laughing or rewinding to digest the full picture. Hungry Em forced you to pay attention. While this isn’t his best album, I’ll admit it’s my favorite. This album & Nas “I Am” introduced me to lyricism & woke this 11 year old the fuck up.

The underlined explains it perfectly. You were in 6th grade when SSLP came out. I was in my twenties.

There's nothing about the SSLP that would appeal to a 25 year old. Like you said it came out around the same time as Nas's I Am.

I was more serious at that age and wasn't into his nasal voice, or his gimmicks. It seems like Eminem's core audience were tweens that found his nasal voice, gimmicks and subject matter entertaining. If you listen to what DMX, Jay Z and Nas were releasing in this time period and compare it to Eminem, one of those doesn't belong.

Needless to say, I never got into Eminem.

Edit. I liked Canibus for the same reason White kids liked Eminem. Canibus had an artificial raspy voice, Em's was nasal. They both had the same rap pattern and both suffered from lackluster production. If Eminem was Black he would have ended up like Canibus imo.

I don't think any Black people rate Eminem highly.

Honestly I think it's Black and White. White people love him no matter what, but you'll never hear his music at a Black cookout or a Black nightclub.
 
Same top 3 but the rest would be different. I wasn't a fan of most of his new stuff with the hyper speed rapping. Great writeup though

Eh, to be fair not every black rapper can be played in the club or cookout either but I know what you saying. I do think if Em somehow never dropped anything else past Encore he’d be more revered. Shit white people would be worshiping him even worse he’d be the rap Kurt Cobain.

If he died after Encore he'd be the rap Kurt Cobain, but nobody would compare him to Tupac or Biggie. His music just wasn't that good.
