defenders actually have the upper hand in this. They can see the returner catch the ball. The blockers are reacting off of the movement of the defenders. That split second is a big deal in NFL.

How are they irrelevant?

the penalty for a touchback is the ball to the 30.

Kick it out of bounds it goes to the forty

if it lands and rolls out of the end zone its goes to the 20 HOWEVER a kickoff is a live ball...as a coach are you willing to take the chance of the coverage team recovering the ball for a change of possession or a TD by letting it bounce?

also, kicking team cant squib it...if the ball touches before the 20 it's called dead and ball goes to the 40...AND you have to declare onside kicks now.

There will be a LOT more returns this season b
