Jets fire GM Maccagnan, name Gase interim

In a stunning move, the New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan on Wednesday. Coach Adam Gase will be the interim general manager while an immediate search begins for a replacement, CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement.

The Jets also fired vice president of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington.

Just months after NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock took the Oakland Raiders' GM job, his replacement Daniel Jeremiah is under serious consideration for a prominent front-office position with the Jets, sources told Schefter.

Philadelphia Eagles executive Joe Douglas, who has ties to Gase and is a close friend of Jeremiah, could be a leading candidate for the GM job.

"Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the past few months," Johnson said in the statement. "However, I came to the decision to make a change after much thought and a careful assessment of what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets."

The shake-up comes amid reports of internal discord in the organization. ESPN reported during the draft that friction had developed between Maccagnan and Gase because of disagreements over personnel during free agency.

Both men denied that a rift had developed in their relationship, but sources said Johnson was so concerned that he began spending more time at the Jets' facility to monitor the Gase-Maccagnan relationship.

Sources said part of the tension between Gase and Maccagnan involved running back Le'Veon Bell and the amount of money it cost to sign him as a free agent. Bell was signed to a four-year, $52.5 million contract that included $27 million guaranteed. The average-per-year ($13.1 million) ranks second among running backs, and Gase felt it was too much, sources said.

Gase, however, has spoken highly of Bell, saying "it's hard to find guys who are that size with his ability. He's a rare player."

The Jets went 10-6 in their first season under Maccagnan and former coach Todd Bowles in 2015, but the team has struggled through three consecutive losing seasons since. Bowles was fired after posting a 4-12 record last season.

Maccagnan had significant input into the hiring of Gase. That's why the timing of Wednesday's move is shocking.

Johnson empowered Maccagnan to spend more than $125 million in guaranteed money in free agency, then let him use the No. 3 pick in the draft on defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

The team also has constructed a promising core of young players, including quarterback Sam Darnold, safety Jamal Adams and defensive lineman Leonard Williams.

The Jets are one of eight teams to draft multiple Pro Bowlers in the first round since 2015 (Adams and Williams), but they also missed on second-round picks Christian Hackenberg (2016) and Devin Smith (2015) under Maccagnan.

Before joining the Jets, Maccagnan spent 14 seasons with the Houston Texans.

What a fucking shit show. As a jets fan, this is so embarrassing. This organization makes it so hard to root for them. Fuck up after fuck up. Every fuckin year.

Yes! I knew we shoulda fired Mac n Bowles at the same time. And jus start fresh. But we choose to keep Mac. You made that fuckin decision, now fuckin ride with it. But i guess Mac and Gase fuckin hated each other. And chris johnson knew 1 had to go so Mac gets fired. Ok, right move but bad timing. Plus we look like idiots. But w/e. Now its ALL on Gase (who has zero track record) and Gregg to right the ship. I'll wait smh. But Mac did draft hackenberg, so on that alone he shoulda been fired. But we ended up w sam. So alls well, that ends well.

Worst part of it all. We let it leak that Gase didnt wanna sign Lev Bell. What in the actual fuck. Now im sure bell is all in his feelings n butt hurt now. Smh. Season has gone off the rails, n its not even june yet.

If we get off to a horrible start 2-6 or sum shit n sam regresses. I wouldnt be surprised if gase gets fired by week 8.

Yo I am literally rolling right now reading all of this. Jets just had to 1up the Giants in stinking. Ol crazy eyes is gonna be comedy this season.

It didn't take long for New York Jets interim general manager Adam Gase to make his first trade.

The team on Wednesday night agreed to send linebacker Darron Lee to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2020 sixth-round pick, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Gase inherited personnel power earlier Wednesday, when general manager Mike Maccagnan was fired after four seasons. Gase, hired in January as the coach, will serve as the interim GM until a new one is hired.

Maccagnan picked Lee in the first round of the 2016 draft. His days were numbered as soon as the Jets signed middle linebacker C.J. Mosley to a record-setting contract in free agency. They tried to trade Lee during the NFL draft last month and then declined to exercise his fifth-year option.

Lee was the 20th overall pick in the 2016 draft. It was a curious choice because, at 6-foot-1, 232 pounds, he seemed small to play inside linebacker in the 3-4 defense. The coaching staff downplayed the size factor, saying he fit the growing trend of fast linebackers who could play in space against spread offenses.

The former Ohio State standout struggled in his first two seasons, especially against the run, but he showed signs of improvement in 2018. He made three interceptions -- the first three of his career -- including one for a touchdown.

Lee felt he had played well enough to earn Pro Bowl consideration, but his season came to an abrupt end after the 12th game when he received a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. He has yet to comment publicly on the matter.

Because of the suspension, Lee's 2019 base salary of $1.84 million is no longer fully guaranteed because by rule, the guarantee was voided. The Jets had no intention of exercising his fifth-year option for 2020, which would have been an estimated $10 million.

In the Jets' mind, Lee became expendable when they signed Mosley to a five-year, $85 million contract in free agency. Mosley will replace Avery Williamson, who will slide over to Lee's former spot -- the weak-inside linebacker position.

Williamson's $8 million salary is guaranteed, and there was no chance they'd eat that much money. In three seasons, Lee started 36 of 40 games, compiling four sacks, two forced fumbles and no fumble recoveries.

Lee became the first of Maccagnan's first-round picks to be jettisoned from the roster. The other four -- defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, quarterback Sam Darnold, safety Jamal Adams and defensive end Leonard Williams -- were all top-six picks.
