I don't think zubac was the plan. I think they really just wanted to avoid paying Mathurin and did the best they could do to avoid him walking for nothing or potentially having to overpay.

I think they were originally going after Walker Kessler and then pivoted to Zubac at the last minute and it allowed to them to move on from Mathurin which like you said was probably the best they could do in that scenario


Also If all else fails they could probably flip Zubac again and get something positive for him they needed to
