This seems to be a James Gunn thing because Guardian series was full of parent issues too. Surprised WB let it rock but since this Superman is supposed to be like a saga I'll give him a chance to hopefully expound on it.
What was wrong with the John and Martha? Good natured folks from Kansas lol they reminded me of the animated series Superman parents. Just way more country lol.

They were portrayed as idiots. Kents weren't scholars but Gunn dumbed them down
 
I don’t get the whole they were portrayed as idiots. I didn’t get that. Is it because Ma Kent didn’t know how to work a cell phone? That seems like a lot of elderly people. They don’t know how to use newer technology. That doesn’t make them dumb.

Shit was so dumb. Like such a plot armor moment. Bruce buys the dying Kent farm. You might be Superman, but your parents work for me now. That shit was so smug....I could be projecting.... But I thought it was a plot point that they didn't have to include.
 
I preferred the entire plot from the CW show where the kents moved back to smallville to save the farm themselves
Letting Bruce save the day just doesn't feel like something Clark would ever allow.

I didn’t mind Gunn’s portrayal of the Kents in fact I never thought about how they been portrayed over the years until this movie. Cause yeah why would they be like regular ass white folk?? They WOULD have like a Midwest country ass accent and they would be kinda country bumpkins. Gunns version of the Kent’s to me scream Smallville more so than any other live adaptation i can remember
