Bling Bling was '99. In '98 Black Star's "Definition" sat at the #1 spot on the Rap City countdown for weeks and took a minute to get out of the top 10. That same year Jay had a run with "Can I Get A...", some clearly commercial shit. This is why I would say that the late 90's was the genesis of it, but from about 2000 onward is really when the commercialization of hip hop took over.

There was plenty big money talk before 99. "Money Ain't A Thing" was 98. Biggie doing big money talk in 94. Diddy's run right after that which is what folks say made people want an artist like DMX in 98. 80s rappers with all the big ass jewely on flexin on their album covers, videos and music that sold plenty. The commercialization of hip hop started the moment niggas started making Sprite commercials over Kurtis Blow's basketball

All true, but listen to the shit from 2000 onward, damned near everybody was on that money talk, VIP at the club, slow motion video shit. There's a difference between a few rappers sprinkling money talk in a coupla joints versus that being all they talked about like they did in the 2000's.

It wasn't just a few though. It was a very big part of rap music. It got to be more in the 2000s because more niggas was making money but the big money talk was always front and center. Shit the 1st rap song to ever get major play in Rapper's Delight them niggas bragging about big tvs and fancy cars. Opulence in rap music is as integral to the music as it is any other American made artform

For those that didn't watch the video I posted, there were a couple clips on there where people were talking about how they decided to give up on rap and after like 30 days of not listening to it, they felt better, less angry, and had better outlooks on life. I think they were being sincere too. They legit sounded like people kicking drugs. That's crazy to me. People are actually out here being that deeply affected by crappy music?

Did they specify what artist they were listening to? It's not a shock music can affect people's moods. Its why we all typically have songs we listen to when you're happy, sad, etc. But if all you're taking in is 1 specific type of music, as in if all they listened to was more aggressive stuff, then that would make sense. But they'd have that same feeling if all they listened to was aggressive music from any genre

That's why I was a bit hesitant to post this video. I've had a couple of other videos of his come across my timeline and each time I've wanted to sock him in the mouth and take a bat to his podcast equipment. This was the one and only time where I was like "aiight... nigga might have a lil point or whatever."
Nah I listen to his pod he's on point about a lot of shit but if you're just taking in provocative clips meant to go viral you might absorb it another way. 🤷🏿‍♂️
