Ok, this is a old nigga rant, but I loved anime before it was a fad. A lot of people don't know, but shit like Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D used to come on at like 1 AM on TBS back in the late 80s. Niggas like me that were night owls were the only people who knew about it. I was talking about it before anyone knew anime was a thing. Fast forward to when I was at FAMU. All the black dudes knew about anime. Niggas was walking around with expensive ass Goku or Gundam shirts because somehow it had sorta become cool even though a lot of niggas hadn't even seen the shit they were wearing. The one constant was that black chicks always thought that shit was stupid.

It's so crazy that now a lot of these black women love anime. I live in the DC metropolitan area. There is a DC comic con. It was crazy getting on the Metro and seeing bad ass black chicks cosplaying for those events. It was like damn, chicks was telling me I needed to stop watching that bullshit. Now they all in. I can't lie. It's dope. My daughters be on some anime shit, and we bond over that. My wife is old school though. She still be on some "Why doesn't their mouth match up with their words type shit?"

It's crazy. Anyway, we're saving up for a trip to Tokyo now. Me and my daughters like Japanese culture, and my wife likes Udon. We'll have fun.

Anime was around in the states longer than that. You were actually late on it if you think about it. Our parents, well my parents since im not sure how old you are, was watching speed racer. Only thing is it dont think they knew what anime was as they were watching. Im curious to know if they knew it was a Japanese show. Astro boy came out later. Then voltron , which a lot of folks watched. The shows you mentioned is when the fad was being born. At least I feel that is when the fad was born

Gotta realize dog, anime came on cable and physical media. Alot of folks didn’t have cable or were in situations where their parents couldnt provide physical media.

Anime is dope, but a lot of people are discovering it because they coundnt indulge in it when they were younger.

When I was a kid, the only anime that came on non cable tv was Ronin Warriors and Dragon Ball z, only once every Saturday, and that’s why it’s the anime with the biggest following, it’s one of the only ones we all knew about.

Think like, the power rangers came from a genre, but was specifically the only one that everyone had access to. So it was more like access was the issue more than anything.

Dbz was my intro to anime. Randomly woke up one Saturday morning at 5am and it was the only cartoon on and it was fire lol. Was up 5am every Saturday morning after that. Then they opened a blockbuster that had a lil section in the back. I would just rent a different one every time we went.

I think everybody's exposure back then was just randomly being up at an odd time when something was on. DBZ was crazy because no American cartoon would dedicate 5 episodes in a row to just fighting. They was like fuck a story, just scrap. Lol
