OPINION Is Marvel's Black Panther movie really a "special moment" for Black America??

there lies the damage in negative perception... you feel as thought you dying of thirst,

and i'm looking at you like nigga it's water everywhere, the drought is a perception..... u ain't gotta drink outta no damn toilet.....
I actually agree with you on this. We don't have to drink out the toilet, but we know that. For those that don't, would you rather them die because of their own ignorance, or quench their thirst so they can learn later? Seems that you're advocating that no one take the toilet water, even those that know no better.

This is the problem with this entire argument. As long as learning and excitement for our ancestry is occurring, who cares about the inspiration.

we tired of seeing the same negative images...

everybody favorite character:

sometimes one thing is a sign of a larger problem...

if your kid brings a friend over who is eating like they never ate before, and has bruises all over their body....

you gonna wanna know what's going on at home...there's need to be some explanation why this kid acting like they never ate before, or why it looks like they been in a car accident.....

i was excited about this movie, but i gtta question wha'ts going on with niggaz when they having a fucking essence festival at the damn premiere....

when did it become that deep, how shallow are yall niggaz living that this is it.....like yea it's dope the movie has levels... but shit.....are yall that starving? niggaz can't afford to be this easy to excite to this level off of shit like this......

a\that's just my opinion though....and for the 15th time i'm prolly more than likely just hating and being a killjoy, but fuck it...something stinks about this, and i'm going to keep poking holes when i see them in the arguments against me.....

bruh, look at the dude who just posted.. he saying my kids won't know about wakanda/africa unless it's from this movie...

like i said earlier... how we gonna say it's black history every day and this movie the only reminder of africa???

the "danger" of this shit is that in the face of it niggaz act like it's the only good thing in the world......

i used the water example because just because it's water, niggaz don't seem to care how it's presented, or by whom.....

yes a story is being told with african influences....

but it's still a fictional story which is the origin of some comic book characters....

but we're celebrating it like truth....like it's parching our thirst for the first time ever

like more honest and truthful information never existed....

we can't act like we so thirsty that we'll accept any ole thing as the genuine article....

black panther is a good movie. great visuals. strong message.

but this cannot be more important than honest truthful depictions of our history as a people, just cuz it "looks better" the more importance we place on this movie the more we're essentially saying we prefer a pretty lie over the ugly truth.....

there's a danger in that that's being ignored based off a false pretense.....we have much to celebrate and to be proud of....we are not a dying people who need this movie to save us...

black excellence, and black girl magic were both things before this movie came out....

like we're trying to place more importance on this movie than the things about ourselves that we should be just as proud of that proceed it.....

Thats where i disagree bro just cuz niggas like this movie alot a whole lot dont mean they gonna throw reality away.

naw not at all..

if it's that person's personal journey that's cool....

but the level of celebration going into it might come off as a bit dramatic if a person celebrated a song to this level.....even a really good song.....even if its their favorite song.....there's a line between showing appreciation and losing your damn mind....and it's not even a fine line....shit bigger than a motherfucker....

the bolded is the whole argument that I was making... It's different for everyone.. We dont all have the same journey nor do we learn or get inspired by the exact same thing....so what is the point of knocking people who are celebrating this moment that they are enjoying on their journey and drawing inspiration from?

Just cuz someones enjoyment of this film is above some arbitrary threshold that YOU deem appropriate they are "losing their minds and doing the most"? Word?

Hold on my nigga, wasn't you the one that said that African Americans should be happy with who they are and shouldn't be so desperate for a connection to Africa. Now you claiming that every black parent should be raising their children up with intimate knowledge of Africa. Am I getting you mixed up with someone else?
because i can present my child to different cultures and expose him to things from an educational standpoint.....

i'm not allowing others to control or influence my child's perception of things....

Du, take a step back for a second. Forget about the movie for a second, and just think about what you know about African Americans in general. This shit is par for the course. AAs exaggerate the significance of everything. It's just something that many of us do for some reason. Maybe that's what you're trying to say though. Either way, this movie isn't probably isn't even the biggest example of that. Word to calling Bill Clinton the first black president because he smoked weed and played the saxophone even after he did shit in his presidency that directly hurt black people.

and again i think people are over representing the extreme... kinda like how they do use...as many say, agan in another light..

the vast majority think its a cool film and the optics of seeing people like them are powerful and can be inspiring in many diffrent ways beyond.. this notion that people are embracing africa because of this film..

Let's be real, on a large scale, this movie won't have much of an effect. After the hype dies down, very little will come from it. If we're lucky, we may see Hollywood more open to make movies that don't have a strong Euro presence. That's about it. On a smaller scale, some people here and there might be inspired enough by it to overcome some personal insecurities to their improvement. We should all be able to agree that's a good thing even if we think that the general reaction to this movie was way overblown.

if i see a gay couple holding hands....and my son points at it... i'll have a conversation with him, maybe right then and there, and be like aye, some people just love who they love...it's not always boy/gil.. it just is what it is....

but if two gay motherfuckers tounging eachother down in walmart like they bout to fuck right there in the isle...

imma be like "aye....fuck wrong with yall??"

extra is extra....just cuz i call it out don't mean i'm in disagreement with whatever the original thing is.. i'm just all this extra shit is a mask for something else...

that's the whole point of the thread... is there something wrong with the over excitement...and i think it speaks to several bigger issues.....and one of them is definitely overcompensation due to insecurity on some level... i think it has to do with loving oneself on some issue, but this has been a work in process....some of the shit i'm just saying as we go along.... but we almost at 70 pages... so i mist be close...

oooooooooo i'm so glad i was too young to pick up on that shit.....

but yea, that's essentially my argument in a nutshell.....

i don't particularly aim well, so i hit every argument and counterargument thrown back at me.....but i tihnk you're seeing where i'm coming from cuz that's a great example of the sme shit..

dude going on arescenio was manipulating black folk to it's finest....

i'm glad niggaz saw through hilart doign the same thing....

and the problem with this movie is that it's actually good, lol....very smart movie...perfect choice in director who took it seriously and is defeitly inouch with the black voice and community...

but this was clinton on the arsenio show.....100% hook and bait......shit was a one host one kill too.....

biggest opening weekend means the target was hit like a motherfucker.....they needed a way to bring in more fans than ever....and went the route of making it appeal to more than jut comic book fans,......it appealed to the most trendy community in th world....niggz boosted their sales off of memes and pics alone....like u know that shit was strategic

at least i do

I hear ya but people rocking all black attire and a black beret... or rocking some kente cloth or other traditional African garb to celebrate a movie aint the same as two folks tonguing each other down in public lol.

This movie is to be celebrated(IMO) because of the representation that is shown, the positive light we are shown in, how the cast, crew and director looked mostly like us, the messages depicted were aimed at US.. and the shit was successful and broke records... cracking that door open for MORE positive shit for US as far as depictions in movies go. I cant/won't hate on anyone celebrating that shit

"riight"

This ain’t doing too much, they’re just having fun and excited about the movie

but the second you realize this shit over a disney movie.....
