COMMUNITY Social Justice Thread: R.I.P. George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor & now Tyre Nichols

Not at fucking all.

Folks don’t really want a lawless country and if they do they the ones that need to be watched foreal.

Defunding the police means that there is a ton of money that is freed up. This freed up money will then be invested into the community on a bunch of social services, including education, job training, after school programs.

Its proven that if you invest a ton of money into crime prevention, then people stop comitting crime. Get rid of the reason why people commit crimes, and people stop comitting crime.

Once crime drastically decreases, so does the need for cops.

It doesnt mean you get rid of cops completly, but you end up needing a ton less cops which means you get to pick the best of the best.

Thats what defund the cops means.

Its basically the scandanavian model of socialism.

What are all the alternatives to no police?

What are examples of community self policing they referred to as being successful?

Idk bout self policing. I wouldnt know how that works.

But there are countries that have defunded the police. Denmark for example. They didnt get rid of the police, they just created a society where people dont have a reason to commit crime.

Here in the US, you risk jail time if you commit a crime but the alternative to that is starving or getting a job that doesnt really cover living expenses. In Denmark, you can be unemployed forever and get a good enough salary from the govt to survive. At that point, the risk of commiting a crime becomes too high. Cause why risk jail time if you living comfortable even without a job?

Also in Denmark, there are no good schools and bad schools. In the US, if im born into a poor family, i end up in a terrible school and have a much lower chance of success. Then I end up poor and send my kids to a bad school. The cycle continues. In Denmark, they try their best to keep public schools fair across the board. There arent any 10 rated schools in 1 rated schools. Their schools give rich kids and poor kids the same oppurtunity.

That puts them in a place where they barely need cops.

I was in copenhagen(pulling a @DOS_patos move here) a while back and barely saw cops. Street full of people, roads full of cars, but you rarely see cops.

Thats what defund the police means. I know a small set of people are saying get rid of police completly, but thats not realistic and thats not the classic meaning behind defunding the police.

I used denmark as an example but other countries do this too. Norway is even better. Sweden a bit worse. Some asian countries like signapore and japan to a smaller degree do this.

If this is what they're trying to do it sounds productive af for society. Also saw some article about Camden NJ where they gave the police dept complete overhaul and focused more on community relations.

That sounds way more promising than knee jerk reaction of assuming every man for himself or business as usual.

So the money they get back from defunding police would be enough to support public schools and support unemployed long term?

Or would taxes have to go up?
