Austin going back heel was his best run. That what he was supposed to be until the crowd started cheering for him. He was having more fun and way more entertaining IMO and they needed a heel. Can't have Rock, Austin and Angle all being baby faces. Who would be the top heel? Shawn Michael's was gone and HHH was not on that level at the time

Austin came back a heel and the actual turn was foreshadowed for months, but people couldn't see it cause of their love for Stone Cold.

And after Mania they would have been doing Rock a huge disservice to turn Austin back before he could get his revenge.
