So what really needs to be taught in school?

Got this idea from the cooking one but also the 1619 project post as well.

Needless to say both are important...and neither should get alot of time in schools.

Imo, schools should be heavy on math, science, and language (english but also a second language).

Basic civics, philosophy/psychology, and history from all perspectives should be taught but time shouldnt be wasted on it. If a kid is really interested in it then there are more than enough resources to learn it on their own time.

I can posdibly see the value in pe, arts, music, etc. because its something that kids really cant get at home.

Thats pretty much it tho. Again, there's more than enough information out there for kids to learn things like cooking, shop, sex ed, etc.

Got a lot to say regarding this because it's my line of work.

Teachers need to be trained differently I can only speak on the UK but to be qualified as a teacher now is basically the same as the 90s. Doing a basic and intermediate IT course should be compulsory for everyone considering to be a teacher. Then you will see a better quality of learning

A lot of people could have used some early training in basic social interaction skills. Manners, conflict resolution and deescalation. It's crazy how many people just have no clue how to move accordingly in various situations.

A lot of that should be taught at home

Probably like 75% of what should be taught in schools should be taught at home (ideally both) but it's clearly not happening - usually because the parents don't know any better either. The cycle has to end somewhere.
I get that most teachers don't even have decent mannerisms. I remember I worked at a school where teachers was asked to help with something similar and they all screamed we have our own kids lmao

Schools struggle with the basics, so start with reading/writing, arithmetic, and science. From there, we should be teaching foreign languages like Europe does. History, Economics(not that socialism BS either), and PE because obesity is out of control.

For folks that say home school.

Y’all telling me y’all ain’t already doing that shit while your kid goes to school too?

Cultural values for starters. Even if partly based on religion. That‘s been almost completely lost. Everything shouldn’t be about money and academics...it’s not natural.

Another thing I’d do is to get more black literature in the classroom. Books like To Kill a Mockingbird is too comfortable for whites and kids need to read the works of authors like Baldwin or Morrison instead. If I was a superintendent, I’d definitely push reading a book like the Malcolm X’s autobiography as mandatory reading in high school. The fact that I had courses on books like Night but not 12 years a slave in this country is saddening.

History needs to be less eurocentric and broadly based off of the decaying views of American Exceptionalism. Too many kids (and adults) out here genuinely believe stuff like racism magically ended in the 1960s and our country is the greatest because we can easily invade other countries.
History needs to be revamped entirely ,there were grown ass adults who found out about Tulsa ,Oklahoma massacre and the destruction of Black Wall Street from a Watchmen premiere on HBO, they had it trending number 1 on Twitter cause they didn't know about this Massacre smh.
