Really got to ask ourselves what/who is settling for this to make sense.
If you think you can do better, then why would you settle?
If you think you can get a specific person, then either you can or you can't but there is no in-between.
If you look down on the person you're "settling" with, then obviously you don't think you're gaining anything.
I don't think people settle on the conscious level when they begin a relationship but I do think people use it in hindsight after they relationship run its course. Common excuses like; we got pregnant, they had money, They made me feel safe, are all just things folks deem more important but don't want to acknowledge.
Acceptance =/= settling either
People come with flaws and if you're idea of acceptance is having to "settle" for those flaws, then you're doing it wrong.
in the end, settling just sounds like an ego trip for someone that can't deal with what they have versus what they desire.
