I don't think he makes any money from music.


From everything I've heard, he signed a shitty contract when he first came out.



On a side note, in the early 90s my favorite producers were DJ Premier and Q-Tip (and I guess Dr Dre). I liked Premier and Q Tip because they had that East Coast jazzy flavor. They dug in the crates and found obscure samples while everybody else was using the same old samples. If you were in to beatmaking and sampling back then (say 91-95) You'd notice that some producers would use the same drum beats as everybody else while people like Premier and Q Tip seemed like they had endless drums to sample from.

But Premier made it to the top and he's been on the top ever since. Q Tip is supposedly responsible for A Tribe Called Quest's sound, but he didn't really do much outside of ATCQ.

I think it's because Premier went to college and Q Tip didn't. I get the feeling that Premier can sit at the table and express himself clearly to record label execs while Q Tip can't.
