Hearn: 12 More Fighters To Sign, They Won't Be Able To Stop Us
By Tris Dixon

MATCHROOM boxing boss Eddie Hearn could announce more signings to his US roster as early as next week but aims to add a further 12 names in the next three or four months.

Over the last few years, Hearn has often told reporters that he’s “just getting started,” be it after his first big pay-per-view show, filling Wembley Stadium or announcing a marquee signing.

Now, he says he has started in the UK, but despite the lavish DAZN press conference on Tuesday there are much better things to come in the United States.

“We’ve started now here [in the UK],” Hearn said to BoxingScene.com on the turf of Wembley Stadium.

We’ve not started in America, nowhere near starting. We’re going to cause nightmares, because everyone wants us to fail, just like they did here, but they have to understand we’re not like that. We haven’t got that mentality. We are resilient, we are absolutely ruthless, we won’t stop and we’ve got a team of people behind us who have a bottomless pit of money who will back us to the heavens. We’ve got eight years to make it work.”

Hearn, who unveiled his opening roster in New York said he was “very happy” with the start, but said it was just that, the beginning.

“We live in a world where people say, ‘Ah, he didn’t get Charlo or Spence.’ Calm down, we’ve just had seven or eight weeks. We’ve signed three world champions, we’ve signed a number one middleweight in Andrade, we’ve signed a top three welterweight in Vargas
, we’ve signed a load of really good amateurs… I’m really pleased with the start. It’s enabling us to go in and make other fights and bring fighters to the platform," Hearn explained.

"So, for example, when we sit down with Mikey Garcia, he says, ‘Who have you got for me to fight?’ ‘You’ve got Maurice Hooker, for the WBO light-welterweight title and you can fight Jessie Vargas, up at welterweight if you’re talking about a Spence fight.’ Beterbiev… We can go to Bivol now and say, ‘Let’s have a unification.’ Kovalev, bring those on board. That’s part of the plan, to assemble not just one or two fighters but a group of fighters that you can match within each other. It’s not really about assembling a stable, although that’s important. It’s about assembling a fight card, and that’s why you can see we are working with Roc Nation, we’re working with Thompson Boxing, Zanfer… Loads of different promoters.

People seem to think we had that announcement yesterday and that’s it. That’s it now. This is our team, see you in two years. There are contracts out with another dozen fighters and even since the launch, everything that we do that makes this look more real and the fact that it’s happening makes people more confident to make the move. Look at Jessie Vargas. He’s made a move. He’s a Showtime fighter, he just drew with Broner – I think he beat Broner – on massive ratings on Showtime. He could rematch Broner, there are massive fights out there for him and he’s chosen to come with us, he’s made that leap of faith. So the fact that he’s done it, other people will say, ‘Jessie Vargas has done it…’”

Asked what the feedback has been since the initial announcements, Hearn said that some had been impressed while others had told him that “they still need that star name.”

“Very true,” he admitted. “But again, it’s not, ‘This is our team, we’re shut, we’re closing the doors’. We’re out there actively talking to Mikey Garcia, talking to the Charlos and we can pay them more money than them [competitors]. We did also announce that Anthony Joshua is part of the platform as well, the biggest star in world boxing, so it was a bit of a coup for them [DAZN].”

The night before Hearn lined his new signings up in Manhattan, Jermell Charlo tweeted ‘Nyc’ and many started putting two and two together. Hearn tried to get a meeting but they could not work out a time.

“The thing is we’re getting so much resistance from advisers and networks which is really good news, because it means they’re concerned,” Hearn added. “So at the moment fighters are being told that their promoters or advisors will match our offer and they will give them three fights a year as well. And when they realise they’re not going to, that’s when things will happen even quicker for us.”

The promoter rated Tuesday’s presser as “a 10 out of 10” as an event, gave his signings a 10 out of 10 each individually but says his current roster sits at about an eight of 10.

“In terms of the stable I want to build, there’s along way to go,” he said, before adding that there will be more names, and they could be unveiled imminently.

“[It could be] Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday… We’re going to sign another 12 fighters in the next three or four months. We’re coming, and they’re not going to be able to stop us because they couldn’t stop us here [in the UK]
. “

Wilder: Eddie Hearn is Not a Guy That You Can Trust

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs) is sticking to his guns when it comes to the terms of a potential unification with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO champion Anthony Joshua (21-0, 20 KOs).

Joshua will return on September 22nd, when he defends his belts against WBA mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin at Wembley in London.

There is already a date for Joshua's next fight, April 13, also at Wembley.

Wilder's handlers were in talks with Hearn to make a fight for the fall.

The two sides were unable to reach an agreement - and then Joshua decided to go with his mandatory obligation against Povetkin.

Initially, Wilder's team offered Joshua a guarantee of $50 million to do the fight in the United States.

Joshua rejected the terms, and said he was willing to take less in order to stage the fight in the UK.

A counter-offer was sent back, with a guarantee of $15 million to Wilder.

Wilder claims the he accepted the terms and was willing to fight Joshua on UK soil - but he indicates that there were certain details missing from the contract that was issued from Hearn. He says details were missing like like the fight date and venue.

The unbeaten puncher still believes that Hearn and Joshua had no intention of making the fight for the fall.

"We all were going in skeptical about it because you can't trust Eddie Hearn," Wilder told ESPN's "The Boxing Beat."

"Eddie Hearn is not a guy that you can trust, it's just point blank and period about that. Every time we did something, they wanted to come back and serve the ball like we were playing tennis or something. We were trying to get the deal done, as you can see. We did everything, we did everything
."

Wilder is going to fight in the coming months, potentially against his current mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale.

Ennis: There's a Young Killer On Loose In Welterweight Division
By Keith Idec

Jaron Ennis realizes there are many boxing fans that don’t know him.

The undefeated Philadelphia fighter plans to introduce himself to them as impressively as possible Friday night. The 21-year-old Ennis is scheduled to battle another unbeaten boxer, Armando Alvarez, in the main event of Showtime’s three-fight “ShoBox: The New Generation” telecast from WinnaVegas Casino Resort in Sloan, Iowa.

“This means a lot to me,” Ennis told BoxingScene.com. “I’m ready to show the world my talent and who Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is. I just can’t wait to show the world what I can do. I want them to think, ‘Wow! Who is this kid? In the 147-pound division, there’s a young killer on the loose.’ ”

Ennis has been very busy since making his pro debut in April 2016. The 2015 national Golden Gloves champion already has a 20-0 record, including 18 knockouts.

The 28-year-old Alvarez (18-0, 12 KOs), of Key West, Florida, appears to be the toughest opponent Ennis has agreed to face since he turned pro. Alvarez has built his record mostly against journeymen or worse, thus Ennis also represents his most difficult foe.

“On paper, it looks like it’s my toughest test,” said Ennis, the younger brother of retired middleweight Derek Ennis and retired super middleweight Farah Ennis. “But come July 20th, I’m gonna make it as easy as possible. “Hopefully, this skyrockets my career after I put on a great performance on Friday night.”

Ennis is confident his activity has helped prepare him for this next step in his career.

“That’s the most important thing,” Ennis said. “That’s how you stay sharp. I wasn’t getting hit or getting hurt or anything like that. And I didn’t have no cuts or nothing, so I was just getting right back in the ring.

“It helped a lot because the guys I’ve fought have had a lot of experience. I learned a lot. The veterans were stepping on my toes, hitting me on my hip. I saw a lot of stuff, so whatever [Alvarez] brings to the table, I’m ready.”

Showtime will air two bouts before Ennis-Alvarez as part of a tripleheader that’ll start at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

In the opener, Cleveland’s Montana Love (11-0, 5 KOs) and Chicago’s Kenneth Sims Jr. (12-1, 4 KOs) will meet in an eight-round junior welterweight match. After Love-Sims, Cleveland’s Thomas Mattice (12-0, 10 KOs) and Armenia’s Zhora Hamazaryan (9-0, 6 KOs) will square off in an eight-round lightweight fight.

Boxing is Still in Doubt For 2020 Olympic Games

Boxing could still be axed from the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo after the IOC admitted Thursday that concerns remain over the sport's governance and management by the International Boxing Federation (AIBA).

"The IOC Executive Board received a report on the AIBA situation and highlighted its significant ongoing concern with a number of key areas... that require further information and confirmation," said an IOC statement.

These areas involved "governance, ethical and financial management".

In February, the IOC said they had been "extremely worried" and "extremely preoccupied" by the nomination of Uzbek businessman Gafur Rakhimov for the AIBA's interim presidency.

"The IOC executive board decided to maintain its position which includes continued suspension of any financial contributions from IOC to AIBA and the right to review the inclusion of boxing on the programme of the 2020 Olympics."

IOC spokesman Mark Adams said the situation will be further evaluated at the next meeting of the executive board in Tokyo from November 30-December 2.

Curtis Stevens KO Win is Overshadowed By Wild Post-Fight Riot
By Francisco Salazar

Former middleweight contender Curtis Stevens won by knockout Saturday night, but it was the actions outside the ring afterwards that was more newsworthy.

Stevens stopped Carlos Jairo Cruz at the end of the fourth round at the Gimnasio Multiuso Nani Marrero in Santiago de los Caballeros, in the Dominican Republic.

Referee Steve Smoger stopped the fight, but that did not stop people in attendance from charging the ring.

Video circulating social media shows boxing fans in attendance storming the ring with plastic chairs, charging Stevens, his corner, and Smoger. Stevens' team fought back in attempt to defend themselves and escaped the ring, along with Smoger, running back to their dressing room.

As they ran back to their dressing room, people pursued them and fought with people in the crowd who traveled with Stevens or others in attendance. Moments later, as people climbed out of the ring and milled about the venue, multiple gunshots were fired inside the venue, sending more people running to the nearest exits.

Local authorities arrived, where tear gas was used to disperse the crowd.

There is no explanation why the commotion began or who fired the gunshots. The fight card, which was promoted by Cruz y Rodriguez Promotions, took place in Cruz's hometown.

Cruz (18-3, 12 knockouts) has lost three of his last four bouts.

Stevens (30-6, 22 KOs), who resides in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, N.Y., was fighting for the first time since his third round knockout loss to David Lemieux in March of last year.

Garcia-Porter Officially Announced For 9/8 at Barclays Center
By Keith Idec

The long-awaited announcement of the Danny Garcia-Shawn Porter welterweight title fight was made Tuesday afternoon.

Showtime, which will televise their 12-round, 147 championship match, issued a press release that confirmed Garcia-Porter will headline its broadcast September 8 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Philadelphia’s Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs) and Las Vegas’ Porter (28-2-1, 17 KOs) will fight for the vacant WBC 147-pound championship Garcia lost to Keith Thurman last year.

The often-injured Thurman relinquished the WBC welterweight title late in April. Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs, 1 NC), of Clearwater, Florida, hasn’t fought since he beat Garcia by split decision in their 12-round welterweight title unification fight in March 2017 at Barclays Center.

Garcia is ranked No. 1 by the WBC. Porter, a former IBF 147-pound champion, is ranked No. 2.

Garcia and Porter initially were supposed to fight August 25. Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza and adviser Al Haymon, who works with Garcia and Porter, eventually agreed to schedule their fight for September 8.

The 30-year-old Garcia knocked out Brandon Rios (34-4-1, 25 KOs) in the ninth round of his most recent fight, which took place February 17 at Manadalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Porter, who is also 30, defeated Adrian Granados (18-6-2, 12 KOs, 1 NC) by unanimous decision in his last bout, a 12-rounder November 4 at Barclays Center.

Showtime also is expected to televise two bouts before Garcia-Porter on September 8 as part of a tripleheader. Those fights – David Benevidez-Anthony Dirrell and Adam Kownacki-Charles Martin – likely will be officially announced later this week.

The 21-year-old Benevidez (20-0, 17 KOs) will make a mandatory defense of his WBC super middleweight title against Dirrell (32-1-1, 24 KOs).

Phoenix’s Benevidez successfully defended his 168-pound championship for the first time in his last fight. He beat Romania’s Ronald Gavril (18-3, 14 KOs) by unanimous decision in that 12-round rematch on the Garcia-Rios undercard.

The 33-year-old Dirrell, a former WBC super middleweight title-holder, has won five consecutive fights since the Flint, Michigan, native lost that title to Badou Jack (22-1-3, 13 KOs) by majority decision in April 2016.

Brooklyn’s Kownacki (17-0, 14 KOs) will be the toughest opponent for Martin (25-1-1, 23 KOs) since the strong southpaw lost his IBF heavyweight title Anthony Joshua by second-round knockout in March 2016 at O2 Arena in London.

The 32-year-old Martin will end a 13-month layoff versus Kownacki. Martin hasn’t fought since stopping Mike Marrone (21-9, 15 KOs) in the first round last July 18 in Alexandria, Louisiana.

The 29-year-old Kownacki most recently knocked out Georgia’s Iago Kiladze (26-3, 18 KOs) in the sixth round January 20 at Barclays Center.

Jermell Charlo Arrested in May On Domestic Violence Charge
By Keith Idec

Multiple media outlets reported Tuesday that Jermell Charlo was arrested May 18 in Dallas and charged with one felony count of domestic violence.

Charlo trains at Derrick James’ gym in Dallas, where he was preparing at that time for his title defense against Austin Trout on June 9 in Los Angeles. According to ESPN.com, Charlo allegedly attempted to choke Jazmyne Olison, then his girlfriend, in an incident that is believed to have occurred May 17.

Houston’s Charlo, 28, posted bail of $20,000 and was released after he was booked into Dallas County Jail the afternoon of May 18. A grand jury indictment June 19 alleges Charlo squeezed Olison’s neck, forced her against a fence, a floor and a railing, and pulled her hair.

Charlo has been charged with one felony count of assault on a family member or house member with intent to impede circulation, ESPN.com reported.

Olison also filed a civil order of protection against Charlo on June 14. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 1, which might require Charlo’s attendance.

Charlo’s Dallas-based attorney, Mike Howard, maintained Charlo’s innocence Tuesday in an interview with ESPN.com.

“Jermell is not guilty and is looking forward to his day in court,” Howard said. “The evidence in this case is clear and conclusive, and doesn’t support these allegations. In this day and age, it’s so important to let all the facts come out before making judgments. We look forward to those facts coming out in court.”

Charlo (31-0, 15 KOs), the twin brother of WBC interim middleweight champion Jermall Charlo, doesn’t have a fight scheduled. He dropped Trout twice in their 12-round fight last month and beat Trout (31-5, 17 KOs) by unanimous decision to retain his WBC super welterweight title at Staples Center.

Mikey Garcia Aims To Be The Next "Post-Top Rank" Mega-Star

Former four division world champion Mikey Garcia (38-0, 30 KOs) is one of the few fighters who refuses to have a promoter.

Garcia has been a free agent since 2016, when he officially reached an agreement to part ways with Top Rank.

Leaving Top Rank was not easy. Garcia waged a two year legal battle, which kept him away from the ring throughout the entire process.

Garcia took a look at some of the other fighters who left Top Rank - and watched their name value and bank accounts grow when they became free agents.

He wants to follow in their footsteps.

"We've seen other fighters' careers take off in similar situations. Like Oscar De La Hoya after he left Top Rank. Or Floyd Mayweather after he left Top Rank. Or Miguel Cotto after he left Top Rank. I'm not saying there's a pattern, but those guys all did a lot better after they left there, too," Garcia told Sports Illustrated.

Garcia well may be on his way to achieving his legacy goals.

He's currently one of the highest paid fighters in the United States - and there is a line of boxers who are willing to face him from 135 all the way to 147.

"The next few years will be the best of my career," Garcia says. "There's no other boxer who's in a position like I'm in. I want to leave my name cemented in the history of boxing."

Promoter Richard Schaefer believes Garcia has what it takes to become the next "face of boxing."

"There's a void in boxing right now for somebody to really own that top spot," Schaefer said.

"I mean, be the face of the sport. Not just in the Hispanic market, like Canelo, and not just with the hardcore boxing fans like Golovkin is. Mikey is skilled, he's undefeated (38-0), he has power (30 knockouts), he's bilingual, his family is boxing royalty…. He's the perfect guy to represent boxing moving forward."

Garcia is back tonight in a Showtime televised main event from Staples Center in Los Angeles, where he stakes his WBC lightweight crown in a high-stakes unification against IBF world champion Robert Easter.

Errol Spence Will Be Ringside To Scout Mikey Garcia For Fight

According to the Los Angeles Times, IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (24-0, 21 KOs) will be ringside on Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Spence will be scouting WBC lightweight world champion Mikey Garcia (38-0, 30 KOs), who faces IBF champion Robert Easter Jr. (21-0, 14 KOs) in a high stakes unification.

In the last few weeks, Garcia has specified on several occasions that he wants to move up to the welterweight division for a fight with Spence.

A spokesman for Premier Boxing Champions told the paper that a December date has been penciled in for Spence’s next bout - and he will be ringside to watch Garcia's performance.

“We’ll see how that [Garcia-Easter] materializes,” PBC spokesman Tim Smith said. “If it’s makeable, it’ll get made.”

Garcia was very pleased after learning that Spence will be ringside to watch him fight.

“Nice! That’s a good sign and that [December date] makes it a lot easier,” Garcia said. “That’s promising. Believe me, when we get there, I’m going to turn all the doubters into believers. I didn’t know [Spence] was coming, but if he’s coming, that shows interest,” Garcia said. “He has obviously heard what I’ve been saying and is paying close attention.”

Garcia has captured world titles at featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and junior welterweight.

His last two fights took place at 140-pounds, where he dominated Adrien Broner and Sergey Lipinets over twelve rounds.

But Spence is regarded as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport and many view him as the best fighter in a very loaded welterweight division.

Garcia would not be the first boxer to take the big leap, after starting in a lower weight class like featherweight, to rise up for a major fight in the welterweight division. Others, like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez have made similar moves after starting their career at much lower weights.

Sensational stoppage by Chisora!. Probably heavyweight fight of the year! I'll post a link in here tomorrow when I find one. You have to see this fight!

Round of the year contender in round 12 for Whyte v Parker. Whyte winning the fight wide on the cards dropped and almost stopped in round 12. Just about wins the fight but AJ would smoke him again as would Wilder. I wanna see a Chisora-Whyte rematch.
