Christian school expels student who posed with rainbow birthday cake outside class

A private Christian school in Kentucky expelled a student last week after officials found a picture of her posing with a rainbow birthday cake.

Kayla Kenney, a freshman at Whitefield Academy in Louisville, went to a Texas Roadhouse restaurant to celebrate her 15th birthday in late December.

“She was happy, she looked beautiful,” mom Kimberly Alford told WCJB. “You know, of course as a mom, I took her picture of her blowing out her candles and I posted that on my Facebook page.”

Alford told the Courier Journal that someone shared the photo of her daughter with Whitefield Academy officials and days later, she received an email from the head of the school, Bruce Jacobson.

“It was an email expelling Kayla from Whitefield immediately due to a post on social media,” Alford said. “I feel judged, she feels judged, just very devastating for us.”

In the photo, Kayla is seen wearing a long-sleeve sweater, with a rainbow on it, posing in front of a rainbow-coloured cake.

The rainbow and the rainbow flag are associated with LGBTQ pride and some religious organizations have disavowed people who identify as LGBTQ.

The email to Kayla’s family outlined that she demonstrated “a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy’s beliefs” and the photo was the last straw in a series of “lifestyle violations.”

The school met with Kayla’s parents in October last year because disciplinary officer found Juul pods in her backpack. Following the meeting, her daughter was on probation.

“Since October, there have been no disciplinary issues. There have been no academic issues. There has been nothing.”

Alford told news organizations that her daughter isn’t gay. She likes to wear “tom-boy type” clothing sometimes and plays sports, that’s it. “I just feel like it’s a label (school officials) have put on her,” Alford said. “Just because I’m wearing a rainbow doesn’t mean I’m gay.”

She even noted that the receipt for the cake listed the design as “assorted colours.”

The school’s student handbook indicates that when there is “a serious departure from the school’s guidelines for students conduct,” a pupil can be expelled.

A section on student behaviour says the school’s “biblical role is to work in conjunction with the home to mold students to be Christ-like.”

“On occasion, the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home may be counter or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle the school teaches. This includes, but is not limited to, sexual immorality, homosexual orientation or the inability to support Biblical standards of right and wrong,” the handbook states.

“… In such cases, the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrolment of a student.”

Alford said she filed an appeal with the school, but officials refused to meet with her. Instead, they offered to change the expulsion to a voluntary withdrawal so that it’s no longer on Kayla’s record.

Since the expulsion, Kayla’s been attending a public school

Whitefield Academy issued a statement after news broke.

“Whitefield Academy is accredited by ACSI/AdvancEd and a member of the Non Public School Commission of Kentucky, and therefore we meet all Kentucky regulations and laws. Our code of conduct is on par with other private Christian schools in our area.”

I hope the WNBA stays around as well. They just have to be realistic with how things are and not try to ride a wave and negotiate shit that would actually be detrimental to them.
