Movie Night (Official Movie Discussion Thread)

Yo "someone's in your house" or whatever it's called was fucking dumb. The only good thing were the actual killings of people but the movie was so fucking stupid

No Time To Die

Welcome back Bond,Farewell Craig

PRAISE : The story set up for this 007 chapter is done so sharply and intensely with a story about James Bond enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica after leaving active service. However, his peace is short-lived as his old CIA friend, Felix Leiter, shows up and asks for help.
Words are said at the top of the film that made me feel dread for Bond and Co. and placed me at the edge of my seat for the entire 2 hour and 43 minute run time
Daniel Craig brings all the right amounts of intensity ,sorrow and heart to his final bow as Bond. Also a wonderful heartfelt performance from Léa Seydoux as Madeleine Swann , the chemistry between her and Craig is off the charts.
Rami Malek as Lyutsifer Safin makes the most of his time on screen displaying an intense and quiet coldness. Lashana Lynch as Nomi does ok as a new double 0 I would say just the right amount was done with the rivalry between her and 007 that it didn't become annoying.
There are good turns from Ben Whishaw as Q,Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny,Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter,Christoph Waltz as Ernst Stavro Blofeld
and Ralph Fiennes as Gareth Mallory / M.
The action sequences have an intense well choreographed sharpness to them.I enjoyed the questionable morality story thread in the film
Director Cary Joji Fukunaga and writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade do a good job of striking the right emotional chords.
I've always felt the Bond films in which he shows that he actually has a soul worked a lot better for me and this one does so at an extremely high level.

PROBLEMS : There was a character that was supposed to be funny but just turned out to be obnoxious. Even though I knew the climax of the film was leading to a point it still felt a bit drawn out. There were a couple of predictable paths the film takes.Unfortunately the film casted one of those actor's in which i immediately knew what they were up to.

The film makes an ambitious and gutsy move and it's going to be interesting if they take it a step further and how they are going to move forward.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

Just watched the Yvonne Orji standup special on HBO Max.

That shit was really, really good!!

Usually I don't be digging women's specials because I can't relate or they just try too hard to be funny instead of just being funny.

This one though was so natural and she had great stories and punchlines. Really liked how she highlighted her home in Nigeria and family.

The Card Counter

Forgetting the past.....not in the cards !!

PRAISE: Odd but riveting story about William Tell a gambler and former serviceman who sets out to reform a young man seeking revenge on a mutual enemy from their past.
Some meandering moments are uplifted by strong performances by Oscar Isaac,Tiffany Haddish (great legs too) Tyler Sheridan and Willem Dafoe
A good study of redemption and revenge and my love for the Casino atmosphere and gambling made the film even more appealing to me. The way the film let's you slowly into the main characters mind and rituals was mesmerizing. There's great chemistry between the characters and when there's an explosion of violence even off screen it's stunning.

PROBLEMS: The pacing is definitely off at times .Some dwelling moments go on so long I started to laugh even though they were dramatic moments

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7½

INJUSTICE

True justice.....who decides?

Praise : I was kind of shocked but thrilled by the intense story threads in this DC animated film about an alternate Earth, in wich the Joker tricks Superman into killing Lois Lane, which sends the hero on a path of destruction. A lot of it reminded me of the great Infinite Crisis series and the stories of the alternate universes of Earth 3 or Earth-148.
A good tale of morality and who polices the world and if anyone has the right to.
Great action sequences and a tons of popular DC characters added to the fun.
Great enthusiastic voicework by the entire cast.

Problems : For such a thoroughly intense film I thought the ending was kind of lackluster.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

Halloween Kills

Hilarious Halloween Hijinks

Praise : I have to praise Jamie Lee Curtis for maintaining her role as Laurie Strode for the past 40 plus years and sure by now she's ½being paid really well and her back end percentage is probably mind blowing but her ability to keep a straight face through this deserves an ovation .The story this time around is about Michael Myers escaping from Laurie Strode's trap to continue his ritual bloodbath. Injured and taken to the hospital, Laurie fights through the pain as she inspires residents of Haddonfield
There are some great kills and some are definitely not for the faint of heart and I actually enjoyed some of the situations the characters found themselves in.

PROBLEMS: About 20 minutes in I knew this was just going to be a semi mediocre experience. This was mainly weak and silly. Some characters actually stand around or meander and wait to get taken out by the seemingly invincible Michael Meyers. I kept saying wow who wrote and structured this film. Anything that was supposed to be serious was laughable because of the actions of the characters and what they did to each other and to themselves a lot of over acting. The visuals of the chanting townspeople determined to take out Meyers......HILARIOUS. It was just to funny because it was as if the characters were saying ohhh when will it be my turn to be killed by Meyers?

Any of y’all already seen the injustice movie?

DUNE

SPICE WARS !!

PRAISE: The 1984 film version of DUNE was an ambitious ,interesting, ponderous, oddity.
Under the great direction of Denis Villeneuve and an enthusiastic and on point cast including : Timothee Chalamet, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, and Charlotte Rampling This story about Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people story threads of
war, uneasy alliances, betrayal and destiny has been made more comprehensive without diluting the strengths of the story. It's enhanced by great SFX, sound and action sequences.
Visually it's a mesmerizing experience.

PROBLEMS: The film does stall at times.I wondered why the nice flow of the movie went down disruptive paths.
I was looking for more from certain characters and unfortunately I didn't get it.

In the end Villeneuve and crew left me wanting more and that's a good thing

LAMB

Narnia in 2021?

PRAISE: I've watched a lot of memorabily strange movies over the years and LAMB is right up there with them. The story is about , a childless couple who discover a strange and unnatural newborn in their sheep barn. They decide to raise her as their own, but sinister forces are determined to return the creature to the wilderness that birthed her. Hats off to all of the actors including Noomi Rapace,Hilmir Snær Guðnason ,Björn Hlynur Haraldsson and Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson
to attacking their roles with enthusiasm and believability.
I was drawn in by the way the story plays out because I was hoping for answers. I did laugh but in a good way because there were reactions I was expecting from the characters especially when one character leaned to the way I was thinking. Trying to figure out how everything came about in the film was fun for me. The film is beautifully shot.I was charmed by the little lamb.

PROBLEMS: I was never scared by what happened in this horror labeled movie I was more like WTF ?!?
The pacing is like counting sheep. This is another movie with to many dwelling moments. The SFX were a bit off in a couple of scenes. Even though I read a couple of semi explanatory statements from the actors and directors about the film and accepted it as a modern day fable the film was to ambiguous for me.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7

Army of Thieves

Theft of my time

PRAISE: In this prequel to Army of the Dead a mysterious woman recruits bank teller Dieter to assist in a heist of impossible-to-crack safes across Europe
I found myself rooting for Dieter portrayed by Matthias Schweighöfer,
i wanted him to succeed and be respected.
I thought Nathalie Emmanuel as Gwendoline (lovely as ever !!)did quite well in her role and Ruby O. Fee as Korina adds some nice touches of personality to her character
There are some slick visuals and heists.
There are mentions of the ever growing zombie apocalypse and its worked in well in a couple of scenes.

PROBLEMS: I got very bored in the middle of this. Even with all of its slickness it can't quite outmaneuvere its predictable and repetitive obstacles. A couple of characters were so cookie cutter that all it took was a couple of lines and looks and I knew exactly what they were going to do .I believe they were going with humor with a certain character and where this person kept ending up but it didn't work because it kept happening. This has been pulled off in far better films because the situation happens and it's one and done. But not this time.

Don't forget to add these to the appropriate threads as well, brother

The Harder They Fall

A Winning Wild West story

PRAISE: In Director Jeymes Samuel and Writer Boaz Yakin's story about an outlaw discovering his enemy is being released from prison, so he reunites his gang to seek revenge, their love for legendary black cowboys shines through. It's very stylish with a Quentin Tarantino like feel the stars of the film shine that include : Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, Lakeith Stanfield, RJ Cyler, Danielle Deadwyler, and Edi Gathegi.
As the salty lines from the script leapt from their mouths with a smoothness and intensity I found myself smiling as it is coupled with great presence and swagger. The action sequences are done well and are relentlessly intense. Some of the brutality may not be for the faint of heart.
There are great nods to some Hollywood icons that have sadly passed away. The atmosphere of the film is absolutely terrific from its opening to closing shots which made me recall several great westerns. This is definitely a fun, suspenseful and intense ride.

PROBLEMS: Some dwelling moments could have been shaved off the films over 2 hour running time. The script could have been a bit tighter

I hope the story continues and is linked more to how things played out for the people in the film in real life.

Eternals

New but unchanging story

PRAISE: I remember finding and reading Eternals comics with the interesting banner When Gods Walk Among Us drawn by the great Jack Kirby.
I followed their adventures for a bit but years later Sersi and Starfox/Eros were the only ones I would see in the comics regularly. I was so curious to see how much of The Eternals history would be put into the film because it's quite extensive. The film is able to sum up some of the history in various ways but of course there were alterations.
The cast including: Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie do a fine job each given time to shine with wit, dramatic and action packed moments. There is a great flow of chemistry between the characters.
The SFX and action sequences are nearly flawless .It definitely brought back memories of Kirbys splash pages in comics. The Celestials are displayed in a grand way. The most effective story thread to me was The Eternals involvement and non involvement in human history.
The two end credit scenes were fun an interesting.

PROBLEMS: By altering certain things and attempting to explain away why The Eternals didn't help take on Thanos the film opens itself up to plot holes. Especially when I watched what happens in this film.
One thread is been there done that and I just thought it was kind of weak. As it played out I kept saying they couldn't come up with something different? You have such a huge history to play with use it !!
I actually think they borrowed part of it from a film and book that is referenced in the movie. I understand the diversity and love it but these beings are supposed to be perfect but you gave them impairments?

Not a complete stumble but this could have been far better.

Red Notice

Definitely in the red

PRAISE : In this movie about an Interpol agent attempts to hunt down and capture the world's most wanted art thief.
I have to give them credit for trying to switch things up a bit when it comes to movies like this. Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson are basically doing what they always do and I can't fault them for that because I wasn't expecting anything mind blowing from them in this flick.
Gal Gadot does ok at least she looks like she's having fun and I appreciated the long and lingering shots of her.
I really liked Ritu Arya as the no nonsense Inspector Das. Some of the set designs were impressive.
There's some cool stunts and action sequences. I was shocked that I laughed a lot at the jokes and one liners.

PROBLEMS: Not only was the plot very predictable but there's the addition of characters spelling out what's going to happen a few minutes later.
Most of this plays out the same way it does in so many other caper/action flicks.
This has been hyped as Netflix's most expensive movie and I kept thinking 160 to 200 million doesn't buy what it used to.
There are a few things they could have done to make this flick better and that's the true shame of it all.

QueenPins had some good moments but it really ran out of steam in the last half hour and its about 15 minutes to long but Bebe Rexha is so friggin cute in this !! Scale of 1 to 10 a 7

Ghostbusters Afterlife

Who you gonna call......

PRAISE: I still remember sitting in the theater watching the first Ghostbusters with my father, and that's what Ghostbusters Afterlife is about...memories with a story about a single mother and her two children move to a new town, they soon discover they have a connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
The cast including : Finn Wolfhard, Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and McKenna Gracedoes well.
Grace She is the standout and I was amazed at how she was able to capture some of the late great Harold Ramis's mannerisms.
I'm glad they kept the kids in a new town cliches to a minimum.
Sure there are some funny jokes, one liners, fun ghosts, and great SFX but at the core of this movie is a great story about family and sacrifice.
There are some really nice touches and tributes to the original cast and movies.
I'm not sure I'd there will be more Ghostbusters movies but I hope they land in the capable hands of Jason Reitman.
If you can stick around for the 2 after credits scenes.

PROBLEMS: The film definitely starts to lose its originality in its last 30 minutes.
There's an odd laid back reaction some of the characters have to other worldly situations.
This is the third movie I've seen this year that has a simple one sentence answer or explanation for something that I just couldn't get on board with.
It bothered me that situations that were EXTREMELY unforgettable had mainly become just footnotes.

I’m probably missing one }= ALL THE SAME MOVIE

I may as well back away from films for a while because everything seems to be the same. I have been giving everything a 7/7.5, binge watching all these movies and can hardly remember them. Also they all kind of do the same thing. Once you seen one type of genre of film whether it is a kids animated, spy movie, superhero, or awkward teen kid movie, you seen them all.

Gay
Strong female
Punk ass black dudes
White guy still saving the day
Awkward ass teen that no one acts like
I need to back away
