Mars Wrigley Reportedly Seeking Answers From WWE Following Lars Sullivan Remarks

WWE Sponsor Issues Statement

WWE sponsor Mars Wrigley Confectionary has reportedly reached out to WWE following offensive remarks made by Lars Sullivan on message boards several years ago.

Two reddit users have received the same response from Mars Wrigley Confectionery when asked for comment on the situation.

Lars Sullivan And WWE's Recent History Of Turning A Blind Eye To Bigotry

Lars Sullivan's alleged past as a message board misogynist and a bodybuilding bigot is slowly, but surely, coming back to haunt him.

The ongoing scandal, which dates back to unsettling old posts on a Bodybuilding.com message board that resurfaced last November, reared its ugly head yet again when African-American WWE Superstar Big E weighed in via Twitter.

Big E tweeted the following in response to a fan inquiring the New Day members' thoughts on Sullivan's now-infamous posts:

Screenshots linking Sullivan to these bigoted comments are available at this link in a post on Reddit's slightly less racist Squared Circle message board. Most of the 30-year-old Sullivan's Tweets ran from 2008 to 2013, so there is no "it was a different time" defense.

Lars' five years of dicey philosophies also conspicuously ended right around the time he was signed by WWE in October of 2013. The timing leads me to believe that the rhetoric didn't stop because Sullivan had changed his ways, it most likely stopped so it wouldn't haunt the future WWE Superstar now that his dream was real.

Too late. The fascist freshman is now under fire after waxing poetic with material that would make him overqualified as a speechwriter for David Duke.

Some of Sullivan's greatest hits include praising white power music group Blue Eyed Devils (sic)—an idiot rock band that doesn't even know how to properly hyphenate compound adjectives—denouncing Muslims, denouncing immigrants, mocking social anxiety (ironically), spewing gleefully homophobic rhetoric, making light of domestic violence, referring to black people as wanting a piece of the "pity pie" and enough alt-right hate speech to fill up the streets of Charlottesville.

If bigotry was baseball, Lars hit for the cycle.

Sullivan's past is further complicated by WWE's clear intentions to make him its latest monster of the month. With Braun Strowman cooling down, it's now Lars Sullivan who is in the early stages of a patterned push, systematically destroying tenured WWE Superstars and living legends such as The Hardy Boyz, Rey Mysterio, R-Truth and Kurt Angle.

Sullivan was even heavily rumored for an elusive feud with John Cena, but plans were scrapped when he reportedly (and, again, ironically) suffered an anxiety attack.

WWE was made aware of Sullivan's comments prior to signing him and reportedly intends to "stay low and hope it disappears" according to WWE insider account @WrestleVotes. The account went on to surmise WWE officials "aren't going to do a damn thing."

WWE is no stranger to erring on the wrong side of bigotry when faced with similar situations. Last year saw the Clash of the Titans of xenophobia when disgraced former WWE champion Hulk Hogan snuck back onto WWE programming to kick off the promotion's radioactive Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia.

Hogan's appearance was his first since being fired in 2015 for making racist remarks that included repeated use of the n-word.

The Hogan-led opening ceremonies officially cemented WWE's controversial decision to move forward with Crown Jewel. This despite heightened international tensions between the United States and Saudi Arabia following the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

WWE also came under fire for agreeing not to feature any performers in its women's division in addition to keeping Sami Zayn off the Greatest Royal Rumble in Jeddah. Zayn's absence was due to his Syrian descent clashing with Saudi ideals.

It's estimated that WWE's decision to condone bigoted practices within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia cost it around 37,000 subscribers to the WWE Network. Still, in 2018 the promotion raked in an estimated $70 - $80 millionfrom Year 1 of its 10-year deal with Saudi Arabia.

This sums up what has become an eternal flaw within WWE as it has proven to never let a little racism get in the way of perceived star power or a big-money deal.

Show that to lashley tho

“locker room is well aware”

and it’s not smart to ones self to destroy your career/money because of one mans hatred towards other groups

his hatred is his self destruction, Lars Sullivan will not be in the WWE much longer. They want to keep him but they can’t.

who gets the last laugh?

Yup. Idk why Vince continues to push Lars on Smackdown with all these reports of past racist remarks. Dude doesn't get one ounce of sympathy from me.

What I don't get is why ppl think they say wild shit online and think that it won't come back to bite them in the ass. My attitude is don't say nothing online you wouldn't say to somebody's face.

Those sponsors are going to keep getting in Vince's ass until Lars get dem en deavours.

Lars be coming out looking more scared then the small guy he is attacking, dude is trash outside of his remarks too.

Lars Sullivan has apologized to the WWE roster

Lars Sullivan has apologized to the WWE roster for bigoted comments on bodybuilding.com that were posted years ago before he signed with the company.

These comments surfaced online again recently which caught the attention of many people on social media. The backlash got to the point where WWE said in a statement they will be fining Sullivan $100,000 and he will be required to complete sensitivity training

Backstage News On Lars Sullivan's Anxiety Issues Earlier This Year

WWE officials reportedly addressed the controversial Lars Sullivan comments internally at least a year ago, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

WWE officials knew about the comments for at least a year and when they made the decision to bring him to the main roster with a push. It was also known that there was a very good chance that the comments would resurface in a much bigger way than they did last year. The idea was to "ride out the storm" like they did when the comments were previously going around social media. Lars issued his public apology last Friday and that may have made things worse for him, by making him a target.
As noted, Titus O'Neil revealed this week that Lars also made private apologies to co-workers individually. WWE officials didn't ask Lars to apologize last year when they dealt with the comments internally, and the story ran its course online. The Observer points to how Lars' public apology last week brought more unwanted attention to the matter. WWE sponsors then got involved after a fan copied the comments to the Mars candy company, who responded and said they had reached out to WWE to see how they were going to handle the matter. It was reported that at least one other sponsor reached out to WWE over the comments.

We noted earlier this year how WWE had plans to bring Sullivan to RAW for a feud with John Cena, which would have ended at WrestleMania 35. Lars reportedly suffered serious anxiety issues backstage before being sent out in front of a RAW crowd, and that led to him taking some time off to deal with what was going on. While the general feeling was that Lars was dealing with "stage fright" and was maybe afraid of performing in front of large crowds, The Observer reports that his fear actually had to do with the controversial comments resurfacing and potential repercussions on himself, those close to him, and the company.

Regarding the $100,000 fine and sensitivity training that WWE announced for Lars this week, the hope is that the size of the fine will make it clear that WWE punished Lars severely, and that it will take the heat away from people who want him fired. The fine is legit and will likely have to be deducted from Lars' future earnings. Lars hasn't been on the main roster long and likely is not able to pay the full fine at this point. As we previously reported, the average salary for a talent in NXT is around $80,000.
