The song has multiple levels but I presume was inspired by Plato's allegory of the Cave.
First you have the individual who is being studied, whom both draws inspiration and knowledge from this box that he watches. The thing that he gains his essential reason for being, soon becomes the thing that strips him of his own human nature of being a being.
He becomes fearful of it leaving, fearful of its existence, but fearful of not being without it,because he doesnt remember life without it.
Then you have the doctors studying it, totally devoid of any empathy of what they are driving this person through. Its speaks to how humanity is programmable and manipulated, to get predictable results.
Then on the surface you have the story teller, Lupe, tell this complex story, viewing the doctor, viewing patient, all a part of a larger understand of human nature.
And the box that speaks to the patient, the thing that tells him what to do, and be to avoid their own pain. Is the most honest and trustworthy being in the world. It never lies, cause its never said anything...in essence you are the creator of your own world.
But existence can be so overwhelming that some of us give up the responsibility of freewill just to feel safe
So basically, the premonitions come from the most logical outcome, a connection to true self, empathy, and honesty
