Führer Trump’s Impeachment Inquiry Thread. Update: The Senate completes the coverup

Staffers For Rep. Van Drew Resign Amid His Plans To Switch To GOP

Five staffers of Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ) announced their decision to resign from his office in light of his decision to join the Republican Party after declaring that he opposes impeachment.

In a letter sent Sunday, the staffers said Van Drew’s decision to defect from Democrats and join the GOP compelled them to resign from his office.

“Sadly, Congressman Van Drew’s decision to join the ranks of the Republican Party led by Donald Trump does not align with the values we brought to this job when we joined his office,” five Van Drew staffers — which include legislative director and deputy chief Javier Gamboa, deputy chief Edward Kaczmarski, deputy chief Justin O’Leary, communications director Mackenzie Lucas and legislative staff assistant Caroline Wood — wrote in the letter.

The officials also criticized Trump Republicans who “have sided with special interests over the needs of working people” and have “refused to grapple with how the President of the United States has jeopardized our national security for his own political advantage.”

The staffers concluded their letter by saying that they are “deeply saddened and disappointed” by Van Drew’s decision to defect from Democrats and that they can “no longer in good conscience continue our service in the Congressman’s employ.”

Hours after the officials announced their resignation, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL) offered to hire them “until they land new jobs that align with their values” in a Sunday evening tweet.

On Monday, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) urged voters to vote for Van Drew’s forthcoming Democratic challenger in a tweet. Van Drew had previously demonstrated in-state loyalty by endorsing Booker’s presidential run.

The letter comes two months after Van Drew became one of two Democrats who voted against the House’s resolution to officially authorize the impeachment proceedings.

‘Mutually Assured Destruction’: McConnell, WH Privately At Odds Over Senate Trial

President Trump has publicly and privately offered conflicting signals about what he wants out of a Senate impeachment trial, stating in public that he would be open to something short or long. In private, he has told aides he’d like the ability to call witnesses on his behalf, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and White House aides are reportedly trying to convince the President that a quick acquittal is the best route to take. But Trump is convinced that a longer trial might give him the opportunity to expose the whistleblower whose initial report on his call with Ukraine launched the impeachment inquiry. That thinking is at odds with what McConnell has privately expressed.

According to the WSJ, in a meeting with Senate Republicans last week, McConnell thinks bringing in witnesses would be mistake, both because it would prolong proceedings but also might complicate Senate Republicans reelection efforts.

“Mutually assured destruction,” Mr. McConnell told his colleagues.

Republican senators are wary of ignoring Trump’s wishes, but the majority of those who spoke to WSJ said allowing witnesses to speak, and possibly reveal new information, might make it more difficult to acquit Trump.

While privately McConnell may have concerns, publicly he’s painted a picture of uniformity. During an appearance on Fox News last week, McConnell explicitly said the Senate would deliver whatever the White House wanted for the impeachment trial.

Nasty, nasty the amount of people that will go to jail, lose their children, lose their jobs, lose benefits, get denied by insurance companies, get over billed in medical expenses, get sold crap that the company that made it knew it was faulty, have their children fail in school, they roads fall apart, be away from their family in the military.

The countless bullshit in this country constructed by politicians and corporations. While they openly break laws and play a game of peoples court with no repercussions.

Trump Sends Pelosi Off-The-Rails Impeachment Screed For The ‘Indelible Record’

In what reads as a six-page amalgamation of his go-to impeachment tweets, President Donald Trump sent House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) a lengthy screed to preserve his thoughts about impeachment in the annals of history.

“You have cheapened the importance of the very ugly word, impeachment!” he railed, accusing Democrats of being out to get him from the moment of his inauguration.
He called his conversation with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky “perfect,” as he has countless times before, and cited the final electoral vote count from the 2016 election, which he has also referenced ad nauseam.

He also brought up the Mueller report, claiming that Pelosi “completely failed” since there was “nothing to find.”

The letter is peppered with unorthodox capitalization and scattered exclamation points, much in the style of his usual tweets.

As he concluded the letter with his typical marker scrawl, he intoned that he wrote the letter so that people understand the situation in 100 years and ensure that it “can never happen to another President again.”

The letter comes somewhat late in the game for the House side of the proceedings, as the full chamber is expected to vote on the articles of impeachment on Wednesday. After that, they’ll be handed over to the Senate where the trial will be conducted.
