South Carolina State University just became the latest school to act on the $1.7 trillion student-debt crisis in the country.

Last week, South Carolina's only public Historically Black College or University (HBCU) announced it was wiping out $9.8 million in student debt, clearing the account balances of more than 2,500 students who were previously unable to afford returning to college. According to the press release, the vast majority of students who received notification of debt cancellation were either not yet registered for the next semester because of past-due account balances, or who have stopped attending college entirely because they couldn't afford to pay.
 

Spelman College is latest HBCU to cancel tuition balances

Spelman College announced it will use federal funding to clear outstanding tuition balances for the past academic year of to address the financial hardships of students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The historically Black college based in Atlanta, Georgia, will also offer a one-time 14% discount on tuition for the 2021-2022 academic school year and rollback mandatory fees to the 2017-2018 rate.

"This reset to the lower tuition rates of four years ago will have a long-term impact on affordability," said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman, in a statement Tuesday.
 

Phoenix Suns: Chris Paul HBCU Tip-off set for Nov. 22-23 with four-team event

Phoenix Suns All-Star point guard Chris Paul's support of historically black colleges and universities continues with a four-team event named after him.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday the first Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off scheduled for Nov. 22-23 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.

“I appreciate the collaboration of the Basketball Hall of Fame and Mohegan Sun in hosting this inaugural event,” said Paul in a news release. “With several family members and friends who have attended HBCUs, I know first-hand how important they are to our community and country’s future. I’m excited to offer an elevated experience to the players and fans this November.”

Morehouse, Virginia Union, West Virginia State and Winston-Salem State, which is located in Paul's hometown in North Carolina, will play in the classic.

Denzel Washington Continues to Fulfill a $1M Promise to Support HBCU Debate Team

Wiley College’s famous debate team recently received the next round of support from actor Denzel Washington’s Family Foundation.

The fourth $100,000 payment of $1 million dates back to a promise made in 2007 to lend a hand to students at the historically Black college in Texas, according to a press release. Funds provided by Denzel Washington’s Family Foundation cover signing up debate team representatives who want to embrace the challenge of membership. Additionally, money is used to fund their scholarships.

The Fuddruckers Franchise Is Now Owned By A Black HBCU Alum

Nicholas Perkins acquired the Fuddruckers franchise for an estimated $18.5 million dollars, making him the largest franchise owner and the first African American to have total ownership of a national burger business. Perkins’ Black Titan Franchise Systems LLC reached a deal with Luby’s earlier this summer to take over ownership of the Fuddruckers brand from Luby’s, a Houston-based reported cafeteria chain that last year began liquidating its assets and dissolving the company.

Perkins was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina to a single mother and grandmother, Mrs. Laurene Perkins who sparked his interest in cuisine. His passion for cooking, influenced by his grandmother and business were conjoined and thus birthed the Perkins Management Company. The HBCU alum received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Management from Fayetteville State University and later went on to earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Howard University.
