The allegations of sexual abuse by Michael Jackson in divisive documentary Leaving Neverland, have been thrown into doubt after director Dan Reed admitted that the timeline given by alleged victim James Safechuck may not fit the dates given in the documentary.

Reed has responded to claims that one of Michael Jackson’s accusers lied in the HBO documentary.

Jacko biographer Mike Smallcombe has taken apart James Safechuck’s story of being abused in Neverland’s train station, saying it cannot be true as it was built two years after he said the assaults stopped.

When describing the details of the abuse in the documentary, Safechuck alleges he was assaulted in an upstairs room in Neverland’s train station, which many will recognise because of its floral clock.

Smallcombe alleges this is seemingly impossible though, as Safechuck claimed both in interviews and in his lawsuit against Jackson’s Estate that he was abused from 1988 until 1992, when he was 14.

Sharing construction permits on Twitter , Smallcombe showed that Neverland’s train station was approved on September 2, 1993, adding that it opened in 1994.

This prompted filmmaker Dan Reed to respond directly to the biographer’s claim on Twitter but has only stoked up further anger with Smallcome by seemingly suggesting that 'Safechuck had got his own dates of abuse wrong'.

Reed Tweeted: "Yeah there seems to be no doubt about the station date. The date they have wrong is the end of the abuse."

Speaking to Mirror Online, Smallcombe called Reed’s response “embarrassing”, as he challenged the director's desire to 'rewrite' the testimony given by Safechuck.

Smallcombe revealed: “Because the story has been debunked, it appears Reed is now suddenly wanting to change Safechuck’s timeline himself.

“Firstly, I’m shocked that he's spoken on Safechuck’s behalf. And secondly, it’s embarrassing that he feels he has to now change the narrative of the film – which is that the alleged abuse stopped in 1992 – all because part of it has been disproved.

“That’s what happens when you take allegations like that at face value, and make no attempts to scrutinise and investigate whether they are true."

Safechuck has been explicit, both in numerous interviews and under oath in court, that he is alleging the abuse stopped in 1992, when he was 14.

Smallcombe added: “By acknowledging the build date, Reed is essentially confirming that Safechuck’s claim of being abused in Neverland’s train station between 1988 and 1992 is impossible.

“To seemingly now claim on Safechuck’s behalf that the abuse went on as Safechuck approached adulthood, all to preserve the timeline of his film, is astonishing.”

Smallcombe also recently claimed that the allegations of Wade Robson, the other accuser in the documentary, were disproved by his own mother in historic court documents.

He said testimonies from Joy Robson show at least some of his allegations cannot be true.

Smallcombe said the case hinged on Robson claiming the abuse started when his family went to the Grand Canyon in early 1990 and he stayed behind with Jackson.

But Smallcombe claims Robson’s mother Joy told a court in both 1993 and 2016 that her son did join them on them trip.

He points to Joy's testimony under oath on both occasions as proof that Robson has lied. Robson himself testified in 2005 that the first time he had stayed alone with Jackson was in 1993.

Mirror Online has contacted Dan Reed's representatives for comment.
