“respect your elders” No!

It's merely a call to obedience and respect for authority.

The saying is ancient tho... It dates to a time where social roles were more black and white. That's why us younger ppl hear it and roll our eyes. We're beyond that sentiment to an extent.
 
I just thought it meant dont treat them like trash. At a certain age society treats old people as useless because they no longer directly contribute to it. Respect at that point would just be treating them humanely

So true. It's sad. In Native American and Eastern cultures elders are revered and looked up to as keepers of wisdom and experience.
