YouTube announced on Wednesday that it will remove extremist content on its platform, including neo-Nazi videos and other white nationalist propaganda.

“Today, we’re taking another step in our hate speech policy by specifically prohibiting videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion based on qualities like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status,” YouTube said in a blog post. “This would include, for example, videos that promote or glorify Nazi ideology, which is inherently discriminatory.”

YouTube plans to remove thousands of videos under its new policy, according to the New York Times and Variety.

The video giant made the announcement after coming under fire for refusing to suspend Steven Crowder, a far-right YouTuber with 3.8 million subscribers who regularly smears Vox reporter Carlos Maza as an “anchor baby” and “lispy queer” on his channel.

Maza posted a series of tweets last week about the harassment he gets from Crowder’s followers and YouTube’s failure to take action against it.

“I’m fucking pissed at @YouTube, which claims to support its LGBT creators, and has explicit policies against harassment and bullying,” Maza tweeted. “This has been going on for years, and I’ve tried to flag this shit on several occasions. But YouTube is never going to actually enforce its policies. Because Crowder has 3 million YouTube subscribers, and enforcing their rules would get them accused on [sic] anti-conservative bias.”

YouTube’s Twitter account responded to Maza’s tweets on Tuesday after his thread went viral, telling him that Crowder’s videos don’t violate the platform’s cyberbullying policy even though the language was “clearly hurtful.”

“As an open platform, it’s crucial for us to allow everyone-from creators to journalists to late-night TV hosts-to express their opinions w/in the scope of our policies,” YouTube tweeted. “Opinions can be deeply offensive, but if they don’t violate our policies, they’ll remain on our site.”

The response fueled more anger from critics, who pointed out the hypocrisy of YouTube celebrating Pride Month on social media while refusing to crack down on homophobic harassment.

The Anti-Defamation League applauded the move but said YouTube needed to do more.

“While this is an important step forward, this move alone is insufficient and must be followed by many more changes from YouTube and other tech companies to adequately counter the scourge of online hate and extremism,” said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt.

Maza called the new policy “a shiny prop.”

“Ask yourself this: if @YouTube has actually been enforcing its policies against hate speech and bullying, why does it need an additional policy for supremacist content?” Maza tweeted. “Isn’t that already included?”

Typical white people shit. Did gets caught and blames things he did on others. They never take responsibility for their actions. Lets be real, most of the extreme people on the left are pussies and suck at talking shit or have extreme thin skin, so brought it to this. Now, its who has the better army of lames who are just going to report anyones videos who they dont agree with, so all their content gets deleted.

Crazy part is racist extremist videos been up for years and they boldly told their followers how they want to get rid of all people of color & nothing happened. Yet the first person they got rid of is a guy people watched because of his silly theatrics when he talked about conspiracies. Now they need to get rid of dangerous content & surprise surprise, POC will most likely be the most affected.

I bet when this gets in full swing, we're going to see the same people who wanted youtube to delete peoples content they think is dangeous, crying the most tears that their stuff was deleted.
 
This is why I just watch cooking videos lol YouTube been a fuckin scam and has always pushed an agenda. Whenever you "discover" a new creator, you follow em long enough and their channel slowly becomes sociopolitical click bait.

It's not ok that content is getting snatched off the platform but at the same they've ruined the platform sooooo lmao

I think the idea that the Left and the Far Right are equal in their extremes is a forcing a balance. There's no Candace Owens on the Left. Leftest YouTube channels like the ones I mentioned up there arent knowingly spreadin' hate and lies, unlike Ben Shapiro.

Seems like YouTube and the other platforms decided they have to do something to stop the spread of racism and misinformation but realised if they kept it objective, they'd just be taking down Right leanin' channels and so they're demonetisin' Leftist channels to appear fair

This probably wouldn't be happening if they never paid people for their content.


Ironically, if they see a big enough drop in viewership........they'll reverse course in a heartbeat.


It's all about advertising dollars for them.


However, if there's less content, then there's less motivation for advertisers to advertise on their platform.


Truth be told, they don't really care about any of this social right/left rhetoric either way.

Ahhh...I just reread my post and I didnt make my point clear at all lmao....

What I was tryna say was that yt has strict monetizing rules so when creators wana get bigger they'll play the game and start gearing their channel towards more divisive content...divisive content is what gets ppl clicking and then in turn it's what gets forced into people's feeds...because it's popular and click bait-y with the titles so of course ppl are gonna click when it's recommended to them.

Idk what came first, the content or the algorithm games with people's feeds but they both work off each other to make YouTube a trash place to be lol. Like I said I just watch cooking videos and skits now cuz you make the mistake of clicking on one of those videos and your entire feed is bombarded with fuckery.

I still dont know if any of that made sense but........lmao

Yea, they'll change all your suggestions. A way around this is to make sure you log out of you google account before you look at some wild shit. Then close your browser and reload it before you log in and view your regular content.
 
For me, the fundamental issue here is that white people are racist and will seek out any rationalisation of their racism. Until Anglo-Saxon countries come to terms with this, Brexit, Trump and the Far Right will always be an issue
 
Well if that's the case they need to ban all the ALT right people on youtube, not just Richard Spencer. That KKK member David Duke is still on youtube. You can't post any comments on his videos but you can still watch his videos. They should get rid of his channel period.
