Kell Brook: Jermell Charlo is Not a Top Dog or a Lion at 154 - I Am!

Former IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (37-2, 26 KOs) is not completely impressed with the accomplishments of WBC 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo.

Brook made his debut at junior middleweight last weekend, when he knocked out Sergey Rabchenko in two easy rounds.

The victory, due to it being for a WBC regional belt, shot up Brook's ranking with the sanctioning body and position him very close to a fight with Charlo.

Charlo is scheduled to fight again on June 9th in Los Angeles against an opponent to be determined.

Brook feels Charlo has little name value at the moment to make it a big fight, and he's heard talk that current IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence beats him up in camp. Charlo and Spence share the same trainer. Spence knocked out Brook in eleven rounds in May 2017.

"[Charlo is] exciting and explosive. He's a good all-rounder. He's a bit unknown at the minute, his name is not massive, but the hardcore boxing fans know that Charlo's a real champion. He's not a top dog or a lion, I am. I hear that Errol Spence gives him a bit of a hiding in sparring," Brook told Sky Sports.

Brook has rarely fought outside of the UK, but he's willing to return to the United States to face any of the current champions at 154 - if the money made sense.

"If the money made sense, I would fight anyone, anywhere. I fought Gennady Golovkin, nobody would fight him. The fans got me here and I want to provide the best fights for them. Of course I want fights in England, bring them over, and I'm the bigger name. Why couldn't we do that?," Brook said.

"I loved that night in Carson [IBF title win over Shawn Porter]. I would go back. When I was younger, America was the big stage for fighters. But Britain now, we've got a lot of champions, we've taken over. Those big Vegas shows or Madison Square Garden are still there. I would still like to tick that off."

Gilberto Ramirez Wants Big Fights, Unifications Before 175 Move

On Monday, Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez's trainer Hector Zapari responded to comments made by newly crowned IBF interim super middleweight champion Jose "Bolivita" Uzcategui's agent Sean Gibbons. The Las Vegas based Gibbons used to be part of Ramirez's team.

Gibbons said that Uzcategui would make Ramirez,"look like an amateur. Zurdo is an amateur compared to this guy. This is a real super middleweight."

Uzcategui captured the interim title on Saturday night when he stopped Andre Dirrell in a rematch of their 2017 fight that ended controversially when Uzcategui was disqualified after landing a three punch combination as the bell sounded to end the 8th round.

Ramirez's trainer fired back by saying that Uzcategui isn't on his fighter's level and that he would destroy him.

Zapari is very happy for Uzcategui who along with Ramirez and David Benavidez are either champions or interim champions in a division that hasn't traditionally been deep with Latino fighters. In fact, Ramirez became the first Mexican champion in the history of the division when he won his title in 2016.

"I am happy for Uzcategui. I am happy that another Latino is making noise, winning an interim title at 168 pounds. I hope he continues representing Latinos in this division but he is getting a little ahead of himself if he thinks he can beat everyone at 168 because he isn't the best fighter in the division. Dirrell isn't the same fighter he used to be with the inactivity he has had in recent years," Zapari told BoxingScene.com.

"It would be nice if Bolivita can win the full IBF title and then unify with Zurdo because Zurdo will make him look like an amateur and make him disappear."

Uzcategui, who is from Venezuela and lives in Mexico, is now the mandatory challenger to the winner of the Caleb Truax-James DeGale rematch winner that is for the full IBF super middleweight challenger that should be announced in the near future so he should get a shot at the winner by the end of the year.

Zapari doesn't believe that the nearly 6'3" Ramirez will be able to stay in the division too much longer and wants to face the winner of the World Boxing Super Series or another champion before moving up to the light heavyweight division.

"We want the biggest fights possible now because we don't have a whole lot of time at 168 pounds. We have at most 2 years left in this division and we don't want to lose any more time. We want unification fights and if we can't get those fights then we will look at 175 pounds because Zurdo deserves the big fights and want to see him fight with Benavidez, Bolivita, and the WBSS tournament winner,' said Zapari. "It is time for Bob Arum to make it happen. We are doing our part and now our promoter needs to do his part to bring Zurdo to the level he deserves."

Imam, 27, rated No. 1 by the WBC, boasts a victory by knockout ratio of 86%, including his last three and five of his last seven.

Ramirez, 25, WBC No. 3 ranked super lightweight, has stopped 76% of the opponents he has faced, including four consecutive and eight in his last 10 bouts.

WBC Prez Says Critics Need To Back Off: Canelo NOT a Cheater!

The president of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman , once again touched on the issue of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and took aim at the critics who continue to attack the Mexican superstar.

Canelo has been under fire since it was revealed earlier this month that he tested positive for low levels of clenbuterol - as part of the drug testing protocol for the upcoming rematch with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

The tests were carried out in February, but Sulaiman says there were additional tests that were more recent and they came up negative.

The rematch is scheduled for May 5th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Sulaiman is concerned that Canelo is being attacked by critics who are accusing the boxer of being a cheater and a doper.

Canelo and his team have claimed food contamination was the root cause for the failed tests - a position that Sulaiman agrees with.

The boxer has been part of the WBC's Clean Boxing program and never had an issue in the past.

"Everyone took the opportunity to criticize Canelo. He can be criticized for other things, but not cheating, much less being a boxer who uses doping to take advantage of his opponent," Sulaiman said during the festivities for the 55th anniversary of the World Boxing Council.

"There were other tests that were done, and they went negative. Everything indicates that the fight on May 5 does not have any risk of being canceled. There will be a stricter monitoring [in terms of drug testing]. I ask you to respect Saul Alvarez , because it is unfair to cross him out because of something that [he didn't do]."

"For five years, Saul has been subjected to a lot of VADA tests as part of the Clean Boxing program and he has always come out clean. Clenbuterol is a national problem [in Mexico], there are many who give this to their animals to make them fat and the boxer is not looking to gain weight.. on the contrary, he seeks to reduce it. Everything says that this was contamination by way of contaminated meat."

This past Saturday night in Texas, Mikey Garcia (38-0, 30 KOs) became the IBF junior welterweight champion with a twelve round unanimous decision over Sergey Lipinets at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio.

Garcia is still the WBC world champion at the lightweight limit of 135-pounds.

The now four division world champion has hoping to return to the lightweight division to pursue a unification with WBA world champion Jorge Linares, who also happens to be the WBC's mandatory challenger.

But on Tuesday it was revealed that Linares (44-3, 27 KOs) reached an agreement to defend his WBA belt against Vasyl Lomachenko (10-1, 8 KOs) on May 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The bout will headline a card televised on ESPN.

The recent turns of events may influence Garcia to remain at 140-pounds, according to his older brother and head trainer, Robert Garcia.

The elder Garcia believes that there are a lot more opportunities at junior welterweight.

"Right now it is most likely that he will remain at 140 pounds. It was his [second] fight [at the weight] and he looked good. He took some risks on some occasions and he was hit, but we were surprised by just how well he did at the weight. I think at 140 he's very strong, and we will see what happens," Robert Garcia told ESPN Deportes.

"On Saturday, Kiryl Relikh was also crowned as a world champion. And this Saturday José Ramírez or Amir Imam will win [the WBC titlte]. The good thing is, that there are possibilities and we could even move up to welterweight if a good opportunity comes up.... you know that Mikey likes those strong challenges."

On Monday, the IBF gave Garcia a deadline of March 22 to make a decision on their world title. If he plans to keep the IBF belt, the sanctioning body has already advised him that he needs to make mandatory defense against Ivan Baranchyk (18-0, 11 KOs), who won an eliminator last Friday with TKO win over late replacement Petr Petrov in Deadwood, South Dakota.

Julian Williams To Open Up Lara-Hurd Showtime Tripleheader

Last week super welterweight contender Nathaniel Gallimore was in San Antonio to watch his fellow Journeyman Management teammate Sergey Lipinets face Mikey Garcia in a main event on Showtime. Lipinets came up short in the fight but put on a gritty performance in the unanimous decision loss.

BoxingScene.com has been advised that Gallimore (20-1-1) will return to the ring on April 7th against Julian "J Rock" Williams (24-1-1).

The fight will likely open up a Showtime televised tripleheader that will be headlined by the 154 pound unification bout pitting WBA/IBO champion Erislandy Lara against IBF champion Jarett Hurd.

In the co-feature bout, IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Truax will face James DeGale in a rematch of their December fight that Truax won by majority decision in a major upset. The fight card will take place at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas.

Gallimore was in action 4 times in 2017, stopping all 4 of his opponents. In his last bout, in November of last year, he knocked out veteran Esau Herrera of Mexico City in the opening round of a stay-busy fight at the WinneVegas Casino and Resort in Sloan, Iowa. He dropped Herrera with an overhand right to the head and the referee counted Herrera out at 50 seconds of the first. Gallimore has now won his last seven bouts, all by knockout.

Williams fought twice, defeating Ishe Smith and and Joshua Conley to bounce back from his December, 2016 stoppage loss against Jermall Charlo.

The card will be televised live on Showtime (10 pm ET/7 pm PT) from Hard Rock's The Joint.

Team Horn Slam Crawford Injury: He's Soft, Toughen Up Princess!

Toughen up, princess. That was the message to Terence Crawford from an angry Jeff Horn camp after the undefeated American postponed next month's world title fight in the United States due to a hand injury.

Frustrated WBO welterweight world champion Horn suggested Crawford was foxing but believed the injury delay had given him a huge psychological edge.

Crawford, 30, earned the ire of Horn's camp after sensationally delaying their April 14 bout at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay casino due to what was described as a "slight hand injury" suffered in a recent sparring session.

Horn, 30, was unsure when or where the fight would now be held, admitting it could be June or later despite May 19 being pencilled in.

It is another blow for the fight which has already been moved from New York to Las Vegas and been dogged by rumours of poor ticket sales despite Crawford being considered the best pound for pound boxer in the world.

American promoters Top Rank have also been criticised for their lack of promotion with no official confirmation about the fight in the US despite Horn's camp announcing it last weekend.

Horn's trainer Glenn Rushton seemed baffled that Crawford would delay the fight over an injury he claimed boxers suffer "almost every day at training".

"He seems to me a bit soft. Toughen up princess," Rushton said.

"I wouldn't see the need in Australia to postpone the fight - I think Terence needs to harden up a bit.

"Jeff had eight stitches (in forehead) three weeks out from his last fight, it was a bad injury and he missed 36 rounds of boxing but still went out and fought.

"A slight hand injury? Put some cortisone into it and let's get it on."

Rushton believed Crawford's injury excuse had given Horn a huge mental advantage.

"I think it does. We think now he is not as tough as we thought he was," Rushton said.

"We will treat it as a psychological edge, use this as a positive and train even harder."

Horn was devastated by the news which delays his United States fight debut.

"I am frustrated. Hopefully it is an injury and not a tactic to try and throw us off our game," he said.

"I can probably take it as a compliment that they are worried about me and I am a tough fighter because they are pulling out on something pretty small."

Crawford didn't give too much away despite being accused on social media of "running" from Horn.

"Some of you fans kill me y'all assumption," he tweeted.

Horn suggested Crawford needed more time to bulk up.

Crawford was preparing to step up to 147-pounds for the first time as mandatory challenger to Horn's WBO title belt.

"He wants to put on those extra couple of kilos because that's what he will need to be competitive against me," Horn said.
