The Official World Politics Thread

There's got to be something that his supporters just want let him cross the line on. Democrats need to find that thing and expose it.

If he starts losing his base he's done for. The GOP doesn't like Trump, they just fear his grip on the base.

When he started talking about preventing the mentally ill from buying guns, his base threw an absolute fit. They threatening not voting for him if he goes thru with it.

And that's the key...their base. The GOP fear them. What's even more hilarious...THEY created them. The current base is the evolved form of the tea pary.

The GOP created this monster. Now, the monster is outta control to the point where they no longer can control it. All the base gotta do is say "primary" and them GOP "leaders" straighten up.

I hope it happens. I think Trump is arrogant enough to think he's bigger than the gun lobby. I think it's quite the opposite. Trump is just borrowing the NRA base.

Now if he can pull his base away from the NRA, then I'll be impressed.

Leaked FBI documents show who Trump wants targeted.

“Under President Trump, the FBI’s official counterterrorism priorities have included “Black Identity Extremists,” “anti-authority” extremists, and “animal rights/environmental extremists,” according to leaked Bureau documents obtained exclusively by The Young Turks. The documents, many of which are marked “Law Enforcement Sensitive” and “For Official Use Only,” also reference a mysterious plan to mitigate the threat of “Black Identity Extremists” with a program codenamed “IRON FIST” involving the use of undercover agents.

Each fiscal year, the FBI headquarters updates its Consolidated Strategy Guide, which lists the Bureau’s priorities in numerous domains such as counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and cyber crime. When an August 2017 internal FBI report referencing the counterterrorism threat posed by “Black Identity Extremists” was published by Foreign Policy, the FBI became the subject of intense criticism for adopting what critics alleged was a racially loaded term.

What was not publicly known, however, was that not only had the FBI adopted the term; it specifically listed it as a top counterterrorism priority in its 2018 strategy guide, referring to the group as a “priority domestic terrorism target,” and even established a program to counteract the supposed threat.

While the documents depict concerns about violent black extremist attacks, they do not cite a single specific attack — unlike white supremacist attacks, of which several prominent examples are provided.”

New age COINTELPRO. Nothing new under the Sun

That might not specifically be new, but there are quite a few new features of this President.

Also the fact that we are comparing him now to times with significantly less moral consensus is telling.

Chattel slavery isn’t “new” but we wouldn’t use that as a standard to judge a current day nation as “business as usual”

Trump Told Advisers Israel Should Bar Dem Reps. Omar, Tlaib From Entry

President Donald Trump told his advisers that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should bar Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) from entering Israel under its anti-boycott law, according to an Axios report Saturday.

Citing three sources familiar with the situation, Axios reported that Trump told U.S. advisers, including senior Trump administration officials, that Israel should bar both of their entries because they favor a boycott of Israel.

Trump said that if Omar and Tlaib wanted to boycott Israel, “then Israel should boycott them,” according to a source.

Trump’s reaction reportedly came days after the House overwhelmingly passed a resolution last month to condemn the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, or BDS movement, which Omar and Tlaib support.

White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham denied Trump ever giving any directive to the Israelis.

“The Israeli government can do what they want,” Grisham told Axios Saturday. “It’s fake news.”

Last month, Haaretz reported that Netanyahu — one of Trump’s closest allies — will have to decide whether Omar and Tlaib can enter Israel and the West Bank for an upcoming tour. According to Haaretz, Israel’s Foreign Ministry can recommend exceptions to diplomatic law to keep BDS supporters out of Israel, but because the two women are federal elected officials, the decision would be left to Netanyahu.

Omar has been accused of anti-Semitism by some on the left and right because of how she’s vocalized opposition to Israel and its discriminatory policies and treatment of Palestinians. Israel passed a law in 2017 that bans foreign supporters of BDS from entering Israel.

Trump sparked controversy last month when he aired a racist screed about “‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen” who should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Trump’s racist attacks came at a time when four House Democrats — Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) — were making headlines while butting heads with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Stephen Ross expressed qualms about Trump bash after liberal backlash

Billionaire New York real estate developer Stephen Ross privately expressed qualms about going ahead with his Hamptons fundraiser for President Trump today.
The state of play: Liberal customers had threatened to boycott Equinox and SoulCycle, the high-end fitness brands owned by a parent company that Ross chairs. Ross, who also owns the NFL's Miami Dolphins, "freaked out" at the backlash, a source said, adding that Trump associates persuaded him to go ahead with the event at his Southampton mansion.
  • "Stay strong, it's not going to be that bad. Not that many people are going to boycott the gym," was another source's paraphrasing of what Trump's associates conveyed to Ross.
Ross describes himself as a "champion of racial equality, inclusion, diversity, public education and environmental sustainability."
  • The WashPost obtained an invitation to today's event, and reported: "Tickets are priced at $100,000 for a photo opportunity and lunch, and $250,000 for the package that includes the roundtable discussion."
The big picture: Trump is so toxic to blue-state-favorite brands that their CEOs often try to stiff-arm him.
  • After his response to the Charlottesville white supremacist violence, a number of CEOs quit two White House business advisory councils. Trump then disbanded the councils before they could fully dissolve.
  • On Wednesday, Equinox and SoulCycle issued a statement saying they do not support the Trump fundraiser.
Ross responded to the criticism in a statement Wednesday, saying he has always been "an active participant in the democratic process," per CNBC:
  • "I have known Donald Trump for 40 years, and while we agree on some issues, we strongly disagree on many others and I have never been bashful about expressing my opinions.”
